How Do We Improve - Who Stays & How Many New Starters

Don't forget Andrew Lee. When the season begins, he will be about 20 months past his Tommy John surgery. He has the tools to be an effective pitcher.

Guru, thanks for the names of the two JUCO pitchers. Hopefully, there will be more coming.

Perfect Game shows the following 2013 commits for UT:

Kyle Serrano

Hunter Martin
RHP 6-1 185 R-R Blackman Murfreesboro TN

Nathaniel Maggio
1B 6-4 220 L-R Blessed Trinity Cath Alpharetta GA

Cameron Strickland
OF 6-1 180 R-R Farragut Knoxville TN

Andrew Plunkett
OF 6-3 180 R-R Memphis University Memphis TN

Jordan Rodgers
SS 6-2 190 R-R Memphis University Arlington TN

Reed Hayes
OF 6-1 180 R-R Science Hill Johnson City TN

Any thoughts on how these guys (other than Serrano, of course) might factor in next year?

Nathaniel Maggio is supposed to be a big hitter, so I would expect him to get every chance to be a starter. I also wouldn't be surprised if Cameron Strickland is your starting center fielder from day one. Any pitcher that makes it to campus has a chance to make an impact. Also, nobody is talking about the kid from bearden he can play and will get a shot to play early.

Idk why I was thinking Thomas was a senior but he is just a junior so it will be another year before he can help. It's gonna be an interesting story to follow to see what arms move to the top in the fall. You have the juco arms, Serrano and the Martin kid from Blackman, and you have guys already on campus like Lee, Owenby, Kidd, and maybe guys like vjax who could really come on.

Defensively, Jammer Strickland could be the best outfielder on the team. Offensively, he has plus speed and is a very good bunter, so he should be able to contribute early. He has seen top HS and summer ball pitching over the last few years so he should be able to make the transition.

Lane Thomas is just a JR but he has all of the tools to be a major contributor when he gets there the following year.

Watching all these super regional games has me thinking about next years team. Here is a lineup I think we could see next year.

Maddox 2b
Simcox SS
Stewart dh
Price 3b
Jackson Lf
Maggio 1b
Youngblood Rf
Houser C
Strickland Cf

This is assuming everyone makes it to campus and price can play 3b. Should have some flexibility with guys like bily, smart, lance, wormsley, and moberg being starters or contributors on this past year team all returning. I think one outfield spot will be a competitive competition and anyone could get it.

Couple of things to watch is if all signees make it to campus we will be 7 over the roster limit so some cuts will take place again. Also, I love that we are bringing in so many juco arms. Pitching is the biggest issue on this team and hopefully these guys can come in and make a big impact

What do you project our pitching rotation to look like? Who starts and who comes out of the bullpen?

I can't bring myself to look really. I mean, Nick Blount had either 6 or 10 saves last year, depending on which UT stat you believe. Nobody on this team had more than two.

We also had Steckenrider. Last years team had a team ERA of 4.65, this year 5.37.

As for pitching...I'd prefer to see Williams go back to his role as the Closer. Doubt that will happen because, I don't see any for sure starters on the current roster. IF...young Serrano could come in and be a starter, Kidd could be a starter and 1 more arm that can allow Williams to be the closer, that would be great.

I just don't know how Kidd will do.

I think Martin, Owenby, and Charpie with the new delivery might provide decent relief, maybe BCourt, Q, and Cox also had a chance to prove themselves. Seems like CDS likes Quillen quite a bit.

These guys must improve and I think we need 1 or 2 more stud arms to move up much. Besides Kyle, I mean.

What happened to Robbie Kidd in 2013?

Elbow problem. Don't know any specifics on diagnosis or prognosis, but I heard it didn't require surgery.

Thanks, Showme.

He was pretty good as a freshman. If he can be a solid #2 to Serrano and one of the JUCOs or Quillen can be a solid #3, we're in decent shape pitching-wise, especially if Williams can go back to closing.

I hope we don't end up depending on a freshman to be the ace of our staff. I understand that their our instances where a freshman can come in and be just that Cal State Fulerton and Arizona State for example (I know Kellogg wasn't the ace but he would be on most teams). However, for the most part even some of the best pitchers struggle their freshman year.

Kidd and the Neptune Beach Pearl go up against Andrew Lee, Drake Owenby and Davis Aiken of the San Luis Obispo Blues today at 1:00. I'm guessing that's 1:00 PT, 4 ET.

at the SLO Blues site there is a way to keep tabs on the game though I haven't figured it out yet.

Ideally you hope the juco guys can come in and be weekend guys and let Kyle and other young arms be weekday guys and give them time to develope into weekend guys.

66 do you know if lee is pitching this summer?

I'm interested to see if lee and vjax gets some innings next year.

I'm hoping to find out some info now that most of the summer leagues are under way. I don't know where Lee is in his recovery...I'll be trying to get us info, but the summer league stuff is tricky and the stats aren't always up to date.

Lee is listed as 1b/rhp, but has not pitched yet this summer. Owenby has made four appearances in relief has a 1.93 era, 1.71 whip, 11ks, and 4 walks

Also just realized Martin started the second game of the summer for Cincinnati, and went 4.0 innings giving up 2 runs

And with that ninth inning 2 RBI double by Andrew Lee, the Blues secure a 2-1 victory over the California Warriors!

Yesterday's game.

That may be ideal, but we won't have the luxury of having Serrano pitch midweek. He may come in with the most power and pitchability on the staff and he's playing this summer to learn to get college guys out. I don't see much chance of him not being one of our three best options next spring.

A lot of these leagues have not started playing and a guy like Serrano is just now reporting...some are playing games that aren't league games. I took a spin around last night and it seems like this up coming week looks to be kind of full swing.

This. The kid was a top 35 prospect, including college players, according to some services. He could easily come in and be the ace of the staff, ala R.A. Dickey.

That is an absolutely miserable way to watch/listen to a game. Maybe somebody on twitter can reach out and see if there's a better way. Geez.

This summer will be good for Serrano, seeing college lineups every time out will help prepare him. The time I saw him in the spring he wasn't sec ready but most seniors in high school aren't.

Anyone know what happened to the Freeman kid from Farragut? He didn't play this past year (Sr year) because of Tommy John surgery, but supposedly committed to UT last Fall.
