I have enjoyed posting here and wanted a bit of insight. With the tremendous recruiting job that Butch Jones and staff are doing and with Tennessee's storied program how do you as fans define success for the season? What would have to happen for you, in January, to say: "We are headed in the right direction.?" I'm interested in these things, among many:

1. Number of Wins
2. SEC wins
3. Recruiting
4. Injuries

What are the expectations from Tennessee fans from Butch and company from the Volunteers football team this year?

With so many new players on the Oline and uncertainty with the qbs , expecting much more than breaking even is a bit unreasonable. If we avoid key injuries and retain our roster intact for 2015, this season will be a big success. 2015 will be the year people start paying attention and 2016 will be the year we start knocking on doors.

I just hope the guys can put points on the board. Keep games exciting to watch. Win, lose or draw keep the the momentum going in the positive direction!

It would just be nice to beat Vandy again...

A bowl game (of ANY type) would be a bonus...

Some hard fought losses...on field improved coaching...and some games ending in Ws more than Ls would be perfect...

I honestly say get 7 wins and it will be huge. Anything less is a let down. 6 is acceptable I guess.

(1) Qualify for a bowl game.

(2) End season with a winning record.

Which means NOT losing the bowl game. For instance: a 6 - 6 record will get us in a bowl game but then a loss in the bowl game would give us a losing season at 6 - 7 = losing season.

(3) NO blow out losses! Maybe a 7 or 8 point loss but no 13 - 28 point losses against "O Bama" Florida, Ok la
homo, etc. etc.

(4) Get someone drafted in the 1st round of the NFL.

(5) Keep Thigpen and not let him go elsewhere to coach.

Those are all obtainable goals!!!!!!

I'd like to see 6-6 with a bowl win so finish 7-6. Beat Vandy for sure. Just see overall progress as a team from last year. All that and I will be pleased this year.

We missed 7-5 last year by a couple of plays. My expectations are high, but I'm a realist and I expect 6-6 maybe 7-5 this year. Next year we should be at 8-4 or 9-3.

In 2011, had Bray not been injured in the UGA game and replaced by Worley, we would have had a winning season.

In 2010, had Dooley not waited until middle of the 3rd quarter to replace Simms with Bray in the USC game, we would have had enough time to finish the come from behind victory and post a winning season, not just a 6 - 6 record. We finish 7 - 5 and NOT go to the Music City Bowl and lose to the REF's. Yes, UNC did not beat us, but the REF's did.

In 2010,had Wilcox had only 11 players on the field, we would have beaten LSU. Thus a 7 - 5 record and not the Music City Bowl.

In 2013, had Worley remained healthy, we likely would have beaten Vandy and gone to a bowl game.

In 2013, had Peterman not played so poorly in the game and Worley had started the entire game, we likely would have won that game and posted a winning record.

6-6 to become bowl eligible and then winning that bowl game would keep the momentum going I think. 3 SEC wins at least. Would be good to see us compete game in and game out and have another top 10 recruiting class

In 2011, had Dooley not over rode Wilcox's defensive plan, we would have beaten Ky. and posted a winning season.

And if many of those things had happened Dooley would still be coach. I hate to lose, but I am glad Dooley is gone.

Amen!

At first, I believed in Dooley because he pulled Da Rick & Justin Hunter at the last moment before NSD. so, I thought he could recruit. Then we would have had a good 2010, had we not lost the LSU & UNC game to the ref's. So, I felt that had the ref's not messed up, then we would have had an 8 - 5 record.

So, I felt that he could turn it around. Then when Wilcox started to have issues with Dooley and Dooley was talking about showers and about WW II, I knew he was not the the answer.

Not so much interested in the last few years as I am this year....I would agree that 6-6 would be acceptable with one of, if not the hardest schedules in D1 football....So, go to a lower tier bowl and win....but mainly I think seeing the team "looking" like they are getting it on the field and turning the elusive corner....and I still believe its going to take one more STRONG recruiting class to get our depth were it needs to be to compete on Saturday with the teams we are use to playing and beating...Of course stating the obvious but the SEC is the minors for the NFL and that's not an easy task...

Pretty simple, beat UF, UGA, bama. If these 3 tasks are completed then everything else we all want will take care of its self. Success at Tennessee is playing mean, fast, and borderline dirty, while beating those three teams.

A winning season weather it is 7-5 or 6-6 in the regular season, 8-5 or 7-6 with a bowl win. Either way it is a bowl game this year.

I'd go with:

(1) Continued progress on the field,
(2) Play tough / don't give up, and
(3) Continue to recruit well and sign great 2015 class

We're putting too much emphasis on wins and losses as a measure of progress. Jim Harbaugh had the most successful college football turnaround job of the past two decades and he went 4-8 and 5-7 in his first two seasons at Stanford. That's why I view "making continued progress" more important. Harbaugh's teams always played tough and didn't give up, even when they were clearly outmatched. During that 5-7 season, Harbaugh's team played like they thought they could beat anyone. That's how I knew Harbaugh was building something special, even when the W-L record didn't show it.

I'm hoping we can at least go to a bowl game, but if we go 4-8 or 5-7 this season, I don't think Vols fans should push the panic button. The important thing is that we continue to make progress, continue to play tough, and continue to recruit and build the progress for the future. So long as we do that, the wins will eventually follow. But I admit ... I would really like to see us pull off a big upset or two this year.

I believe it all hinges on QB play, which it normally does. With solid improvement for our QB, we have a chance to win 7 games or so. But, if it is more of the same of missing open receivers, then we probably are looking at 5 wins again.

Line play will be key too, but I think our QB play is the main thing that held us back last year. And will be the determining factor this year, too.

Too many ifs in those games. The main thing I want to see this season is all the "ifs" removed. This is the year achieving consistency is the cornerstone to rising up. More quality depth and better conditioning should help with a more competitive effort. If someone is hurt, there is a minimal drop-off between the 1 and the 2. Better speed and smarter play in all three phases: O, D, & Special Teams.
