How does UT define success 2014-2015?

A successful year for the Vols at the least would be 6-6 and the opportunity to play in a bowl game. The Vols haven't been to a bowl game since December 30th 2010. I think if the Vols can have a 6-6 season + opportunity to play in a bowl game it'll show progress.

I'm still betting on a 7-5 season this year which will show tremendous improvement over the past 3 or 4 seasons. I understand the Vols are young and inexperienced but I also realise that young and inexperienced team will be head and shoulders FASTER than last year. UT has some real playmakers coming in this year and I am remaining optimistic that Marquez North, Malone, Pearson & Hurd will be the biggest difference for the Vols on offense this year.

As for defense they did look shakey during the O&W game but with guys like Cameron Sutton, Brian Randolph, JRM, A.J. Johnson, and the return of Curt Maggitt; I think we'll see the Vols defense start to glue together and turn some heads.

Successful Season 6-6 and just get to a bowl game.

1) Show signs of improvement in all areas
2) Hold on to current recruits
3) Hold on to ThigDaddy

My take and perspective, again thanks for being such gracious hosts. From 1970-2010 Utah State had a total of three winning seasons. We were one of the worst two or three football programs in the country. You are nowhere near where we were. When Gary Andersen arrived in 2010 the on the field results in terms of W/L totals were not evident. Two years we sat at 4-8, but we were no longer getting blown out and the team was in almost every game. The on the field product was much better in terms of the physical nature, strength and conditioning of the players. We could sense the culture was changing and that we'd start finally beating our peers, patience had to win the day and it did.
I think it will be telling this year more than W/L, is if your recruiting continues to improve, you maybe knock one of the big boys in the SEC off, and your players continue to play with more discipline on offense and defense. It's hard to put tangible numbers to it, but I think a fan can use the eye test to determine. Top SEC programs with the resources and tradition like UT can't afford to be patient, but I think Butch will make you a winner yet.

Success this year for Tennessee would be to compete and not hear stories of thrown games. Kicker able to make extra points. Team to show up and even if they lose show pride and fight until its over. Tennessee has failed to do that over the last few seasons. Last year it was good to see emotion on the side line. Butch has to change the way of thinking on this team. They have to understand losing is not ok. Last few seasons losing was ok and the players went on with their lives with no feeling invloved. The electric feeling fans used to get when watching the Vols will come back and we will know if its working out or not the first 4 games this season. It will be a rough road but player attitude will show how much coaching has done to improve the team.

Because of the need to replace BOTH lines of scrimmage & no clear #1 QB, this is a 5-7 team with that schedule. Making a bowl game would be a huge accomplishment & a major case of overachieving, which certainly hasn't been our MO for the last decade. However, with the recruits Butch has brought in, our team speed & play making ability will be greatly improved. We are definitely headed in the right direction.

That said, the SEC East isn't exactly beaming with certainty this year. UGA, USC, & Mizzou are all breaking in new QBs. UF will have a great defense, but their offense has been dreadful. And Vandy & UK are who they are (although Vandy Has beaten us recently).

If our QB can manage the game & our oline can just be serviceable, we could be in a few games a surprise a few people.

I think success this year will be seeing a team on the field that believes it can win. Now that most of the Kiffin/Dooley players have moved on, I hope they took with them their defeatist mindset. I don't mean to sound harsh, but every game in which we had a shot to overachieve, it seemed we found a way to lose. I want to see (and think we will) a group of new guys that have a mindset that can win those types of games & are meaner, nastier, more prideful about doing it. USC was a step last year & I hope to see more of that this year!

I think you will see struggles at the beginning of the year. Probably gonna hear alot of ticked off fans that will begin changing their tune as the season progresses. I can see this team pulling out some big wins. 7-5 is within reach I believe. They will finish strong and be preseason top 15 next year. That's my opinion anyway.

It's gonna help us that we play Florida in Oct this year.
