How exactly do assistant coaches get considered for head coaching jobs?

Coincidentally, Georgia Southern's Athletic Director just tweeted that he was in Knoxville today (at Calhoun's). GSU is looking for a head coach after Jeff Monken left for Army on Christmas Eve.

Could just be a coincidence. But GSU is moving up to I-A next year and is a pretty attractive job for someone looking to get their first HC job.

This couldn't be for one of our assistants or cordinators!!! They all suck!!! Don't you read this board!

I never understood in the NFL, why NFL coaches get recycled so much. They get fired because of a horrible 2-3 years, then another team comes along and hires them

Same reason players get traded. Some folks do better in a different environment, with different personnel, different expectations and whatnot.

It appears there are goin to be a lot of openings in the league for some head coaches, but it appears the pickins are slim for a proven coach!

It's called networking with various contacts (prob at least 25 big time people) by taking multiple coaching jobs (and clinics) at various levels in which you form a connected relationship with people so they will influence people on your behalf by calling or meeting with them.
