I would kill for private SS accounts were one could select "investments" (US T Bonds, CDs, Large Cap equities)
firing employees also works, but the fact is that the federal pay scale not only is competitive, but far more than the private sector. as you point out they've been getting raises while the private sector wages have been flat at best. i'm just trying to level the playing field. it's not as though these peopel will quit.
and how about this amazing concept... when you die, your SS account is "yours" and is passed down to your heirs (can only be rolled over to an IRA or their SS account) or given to your favorite charity
how about people invest their own money in 401ks rather than having hte gov't run the program? i don't want the govt telling me how much i have to save for retirement and don't think that every market crash wouldn't be followed by the poltiicians wanting to tax the young working class to make up the deficit in the old farts SS accounts. edit: and that completely ignores the fact we can't keep the old peoples social security levels AND fund a private system too.
protecting against the stupid is a democrat mantra. personally i couldn't care less.
And the gov't is better? Don't think so.
I don't disagree but wonder how it works when those people are still being forced to work at 75yo because they thought their entire paycheck had to be spent before the next one arrived and a large cap funds consists of 59fifty's with the sticker still on.
As expected, a lot of posts about Obama sucks, the Dems suck, social spending sucks, with a smattering of posts that neither party is serious about cutting spending or balancing the budget.
The original question was, what exactly will the Republicans do to balance the budget? This does not encompass your imaginary
But to qualify this has to actually be something they would do. So far, they have offered nothing. I think if they run on that, they do need to explain.

and this is our problem how exactly? social security currently isn't enough money to retire on either. the problem is what happens if the gov't screws up the investment? will they cut the benefits or tax the rest of us to make up the difference? i'd bet the farm on the latter.
I know it shouldn't be but to a small part of the population they will never make enough to get out of the job market.
I'm pretty sure most know I'm not a fan of big gov't but some will need help. But obviously if we concentrated on them the spending would be cut enough where no one would complain. As it is everyone thinks they are owed so we'll never get past it
I liked that suggestion (but of course it makes too much sense to be implemented)
