How is Florida looking?

I'm picking Florida to beat us. I have no faith in our coaching staff. Our offense is struggling and Florida always has a good defense. They will also have there game of the year against us.

I think it depends on who you ask, but essentially the following through two games:

OL

The OL issues aren't as bad as they could be, but it isn't great either. Pass protection, strangely, has been better than run blocking so far, which has been terrible.

UF should receive a boost in OL play with the return of Martez Ivey this week.

QB

The QB situation is better than when Driskel was here. Clearly. Treon and Grier can both run the team, but have different strengths. I think once the coaches settle on a QB, the offense will slowly improve. Grier can make all the passes, although his deep ball needs some touch work, whereas Treon is a bit better on the move and isn't as good with his intermediate passes. He has a much better deep ball though.

Both QB's lead big time drives when UF was pushed to the limit last week (Grier lead a TD drive to take a 17-14 lead) and Harris lead a QB drive to essentially put the game away and took a 31-17 lead.

Neither is perfect and both need to develop, but UF's passing game is WOLRDS better than last year.

WR

The WR play is so much better than we though it could be. Denadre Goolsby and Cyontai Lewis are legitimate threats at TE/WR. They aren't the best blockers, but in the receiving game, they are a match up nightmare. Demarcus Robinson is still a play maker, and Brandon Powell has a lot of ability with the ball in his hands. The unit as a whole has done a good job catching the ball as well. It is, ironically, a team offensive strength right now.

RB

Solid unit if not anything special. UF has three legitimate RB's that can play, but Kelvin Taylor and Jordan Cronkrite are the best right now, IMO. Considering the poor blocking, they have done well getting yards after contact.

Defense

DL

The DL has been dominant. 6 sacks, only 57 rushing yards allowed in 2 games, held ECU to -13 rushing yards (NEGATIVE 13!!!) and has generally owned the LOS against lesser opponents. It'll be interesting to see how it stands up against UK this week.

LB

They just lost Anzalone, but we don't know for how long. Davis and Morrison and Anzlaone were all great in run support, but against the pass, only Anzalone is any good. Without him, UF is weak against the pass when the LBs are in coverage. ECU took advantage of that late and almost beat Florida.

DB

Corners, even without VH3 who didn't play last week, have been AWESOME. They have only given up 1 TD, and that ball was just misjudged in the air. The Safties have been only so-so. Keanu Neal has not played yet, but returns for the Kentucky game, and Marcus Maye, the other starter, played his first game against ECU. The back up safeties have NOT held up in man coverage and Washington and Harris were exploited big time against ECU in the 4th quarter. The unit should be much better with all the starters back now, but even with their "subpar" performance, they have only allowed 5.5 yards per attempt, so a good unit.

Special Teams

Punting has been pretty good, and Kick offs have been ridiculously good, but the PR game is meh and the fg kicking almost cost UF the ECU game. Austin Hardin is a head case. He can miss from 20 or hit from 55. Brandon Powell has been good in limited attempts at KO return.

All in all, I am happy with the way the team looks, and if they pick a QB and continue to improve, I think they can beat anyone on the schedule. They will probably be very inconsistent all year though, so they could lose to ANYONE.

Spot on -- but who do you pick at QB?

I think the future is Grier, and of the two, he stands to improve the most as the season wears on. He appears to be so much more in command out there, and has a cannon for an arm. Yes, he needs to work on his touch some. But he has show some ability to do that, and it seems to me will only get better.

I just think Harris is capped out.

UF left 17 points on the field against ECU. Two missed FGs, a bogus PI call resulting in a FG instead of TD, and our middle linebacker tackling our defensive end on what would have been a walk off TD.

I'm not ready to push the panic button on his season just yet.

I just need McElwain to trust Grier's upside.

Honestly, I am torn. Grier has a gunslinger mentality and is confident to the point of arrogance. He is very decisive, which is good sometimes, and terrible at others. He almost threw two interceptions on the 2nd TD drive he lead to make it 17-14, and both of them were bad decisions on his part. He clearly has the biggest upside of the two as a passer, but as far as protecting the football and leading the team, he may not be as good as Treon. He is a really good runner, better than I thought though, although he is not elusive in the pocket. His deep throw needs some touch work.

Treon Harris is a better team leader, you can see it on the field, but is unable to make a lot of the more precision intermediate throws that Grier can make. He has much better touch on his deep ball and UF seems to run the ball better with him on the field, but he is clearly limited, especially compared to what Grier can do, passing the football. He is the quicker and more elusive of the two.

That being said, for the first road start of the year at Kentucky, I can definitely seen now why Mac is having trouble picking a starter.

And say what you want about Grier over Harris, they both lead clutch drives in the 2nd half. And when Grier had a chance to shut down the QB competition and take over, he had a REALLY BAD SERIES. Then Harris came in and finished out the game.

At this point, Mac just needs to pick one and we need to get that guy as many first team reps as humanly possible.

Overall defense is solid. Offense is average. Flashes of talent but can't sustain a drive. Grier is the real deal.

Offensive line is easily overcome by a pass rush. Against SEC caliber speed I think you'll see a lot of screen passes and rb's staying back to pass block.

So it will be tough for us to ever beat anybody really deep.

wont matter, we'll get to your QB, but wont be able to tackle him.

If you listen to make he's talking about WG most of the time in his presser. Guy wants Grier to take control of job and run with it but he can't trust him 100% with the job. Grier makes more mental makes than Harris which is the reason we have this rotation going into Wk3. Harris was never going back in the ECU game until Grier went all Rex Grossman with a few throws.

I just don't see any way that UT wins this game, especially if Maggitt is out. I thought all offseason that our biggest opportunity would be to pressure the hell out of Grier/Harris. Well, we're down one of our top pass rushers already and Mayfield still found a way to beat us even while running for his life all night.

Don't throw in the towel just yet. We just need to show up down there and fight like hell. Florida is better at corner than Oklahoma. I expect Florida to have everybody in the tackle box except VHIII & Tabor. They will make Dobbs prove he can throw a pass down field.

That's a terrifying thought. Dormady may have a chance to become Peterman 2.0.

The tackling issues have been here since Chavis was in charge of the defense years ago. One of those things that appear to be impossible to improve on through out the season.

I would say respond with play action but the OL has to be able to hold their block a little longer than .25 seconds.

if butch actually coached up and used the talent at wr i might be worried about the UT game but those guys dont catch any balls

stop the run like OU did in the second half and we got this
