The Berkely, CA city council votes to kick the US Marines out of the city.

http://www.contracostatimes.com/ci_8120433?source=rss

the Berkeley City Council, which voted 6-3 Tuesday night to tell the U.S. Marines that its Shattuck Avenue recruiting station "is not welcome in the city, and if recruiters choose to stay, they do so as uninvited and unwelcome intruders."

In addition, the council voted to explore enforcing its law prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation against the Marines because of the military's don't ask, don't tell policy. And it officially encouraged the women's peace group Code Pink to impede the work of the Marines in the city by protesting in front of the station.

I know there are some here who consider themselves "the left" and would never endorse this type of behavior and any broad brush I paint with doesn't include you.

refering to the berkeley city council as merle left is kind of like refering to osama bin laden as a guy "who dislikes the united states."

Thanks for adding that, I know there are extremist on the left but a lot of us don't think like that. Our soldiers past and present deserve all the respect we have to give.

these are the same people who declared berkeley a "nuclear free zone" even though the world's 3rd largest cyclotron resides in the berkeley hills.

the also passed a resolution banning snapple in the city because snapple sold it's product in burma or something. of course you can't ban a product in a city, but passing useless resolutions is approx 80% of berkeley council's duties

droski, whatever happened with the students camping out in the trees next to the stadium? That was one of the funniest things I have ever seen, well, until the Vols got beat.

they are still there. it's the city of berkeley who is suing the university for building the new facilities and therefore delaying breaking ground and tearing down the trees. the idiots in the trees haven't delayed anything. they do get good press though.

Can't say that I am all that upset with the Department of the Navy's ugly stepchild getting the screw :boxing2:

I bet that losing their Berkeley recruiting station really puts a crimp in the Marines' recruiting program.

They are very misguided folks. Funny how a few (very few) unimportant people get so much press.

That's awful.

Reminds me of soilders returning from Iraq & Afganistan and being either denied entry or subjected to the Walter Reed hospital’s dilapidated conditions, despite White House secretary Tony Snow admitting Bush was previously aware fo the conditions, before the articles appeared in the Washington Post.

guess what? the conditions at Walter Reed sucked long before W came into the White House. They sucked after the first Gulf War, they sucked after Mogadishu, and they sucked after Kosovo.

The VA medical system has been a joke since it's inception and is a perfect indicator of what we can expect should Hillary or Obama get their wish of universal health care.
