How the new 12 Team playoff in 2024-2025 would look this year

I just don't understand why any team deserves or needs a bye. Avoid the bye week and either make it playoff of 8 teams or push it to 16.

The reasoning I would use it that this expands the field considerably while also giving a greater incentive and reward to the teams with the most elite resumés. The regular season keeps its importance. While the UT-UGA game might typically decide who makes the playoff, in this setup it would determine who has to play one less game in the CFP.

The real question I have is: what happens to Conference championship games?

This Bye may also exist because the assumption would be that the Top 4 would have played in a CCG and won it. The others may or may not.

Given this expanded playoff, a team could possibly play 16 games in a season (12 + CCG + 3 CFP games).

So.... LSU wins, K-State wins, Utah wins, 3 teams in with at least 2 losses. Possibly 3 one loss teams left out. 6 conference champions get in, 4 of these could have 2 or 3 losses. Is this really the best teams? Just spit balling here ....

On any given day, we could beat all of them neutral site, most home or away, with UGA still being the most difficult! One thing I would like every ball fan to think about and remember about the season is we have a very smart coach and this year gave Heupel everything he needs to know about how to coach in the SEC!!!! #GBO

Never going to make everybody happy. But any over 16 is crazy. I was all for the 8 team playoff but hey I think 12 will work great. But at some point it has to stop. We don’t need to be changing the format every 4-5 years. I personally agree with you I would rather see it be 8 or 16. 1 plays 8 and all down the line or 1 versus 16 and on down the line. I don’t know why they chose 12 with the top 4 byes either, unless the committee was having trouble getting agreement on 8 but some refused to go high as 16 so they compromised. That’s the only reason I can see going for a off number. This year if you took the top 8 that would be a heck of a playoff with great matchups. Of course as someone showed what the 12 team playoff would look like and it looked awesome also. I am glad we are expanding past 4. And maybe that move will make the quit the outdated tue ins with the rest of the bowls. Because the only way to keep interest for those games will be too get the best matchup possible. GBO

I would be in full support of byes if they went to the actual top 4 seeds. Those teams would have earned the bye with excellent play, and it provides incentive to get one of the top seeds.

Making it the top 4 conference winners is garbage, as all conferences aren't created equal (despite what the powers that be try to sell), so you will have champs from weaker conferences (every conference but the SEC) getting byes over much better teams that play in a better conference.

Eight teams would be perfect, actually, but 16 is way too big and there would be endless blowouts.
So if we were in the 12 team playoff this year and LSU upsets UGA, they would get a bye? Joke if that's how it's going to be. Conf champs should get automatic bid, not automatic bye

Since the top 6 ranked conference Champions are automatic bids, and according to how it's worded the top 4 conference Champs get 1st round bye does this force ND to go to a conference or are they good with 5th seed at best?

I don't agree with people who think this de-values the regular season. Teams still have to play their schedule to get into the Top 12, and giving 1-4 a bye further awards those spots because 5-12 have to play the additional game in order to advance. I say bring it on.

while objectivity this may be true, this is really false hope as we’ve seen how fallible those who conduct the rankings are. Frankly, the Kramer-devised BCS selection method was superior in that it averaged out those votes with the clear biases that the CFP has demonstrated.

Maybe. And there will eventually be debate among the 13-16 ranked teams as to why they deserve to be 12. But overall I think there’s more parity in 1-12 than anything beyond that. I don’t believe the BCS should have ever been taken away, but it’s just where we are now.
