Let’s start on the defensive side of the ball first since Coach Martin constantly emphasizes that we are going to be a great defensive team first.

1. Transition defense—This team does a terrible job of getting back and stopping teams in transition; Especially off missed shots and turnovers. Our post look like their stuck in mud and our guards aren’t much better. We need to improve as teams are constantly playing 3 on 2, 2 on1 against us. Drill work--Sending two back on every shot--demanding our post run the floor--something!

2. Change defenses—I understand that Coach Martin is a man-to-man guy. I have no problem for with that, but with the level of talent/coaching we are going to see in SEC we need a change of pace at times. Coaches are able to prep for our defense for days and it shows. We need a couple of options, especially if we are going to compete with the likes of Kentucky, Alabama, etc. This team just isn't built to play man-to-man all the time.

The offensive side of the ball has seen a decline as the season progresses.

1. Zone Offense—I actually got to the point against College of Charleston that I was ready to turn the TV off. The four out motion that we ran was terrible—Time after time we put ourselves late in the shot clock and then had to shoot a contested three pointer. We have to put someone in the high post and someone in the short corner. The three times that we did this, we scored. Our guards have to penetrate at the goal as well—attacking gaps. The motion offense against the zone isn’t good for us—get rid of it!

2. T. Golden has to take care of the basketball. Coach Martin has to demand this out of him! He tries way too many homerun passes that might get thru 1 out of 10 times. He also needs to limit his bad threes early in the offense. He’s at his best when he’s penetrating and getting other guys looks at the basketball off this penetration.

3. Run the offense thru Maymon. The more we throw the ball to him in the post, short corners and isolate him the more teams will flatten their defense and provide open driving lane and uncontested threes.

I’m not trying to run Coach Martin into the ground. I know that he didn’t recruit a lot of these guys and as he has a chance to get some players that better fit his style we will see some improvement. That said a coaches job is to evaluate his players and find a way to win with them. We can change some things and win more games—We are not going to get recruits losing to the Oakland's, Austin Peay's and College of Charlston's of the world!

I'm ALLVOL and always will be--Just think we some minor tweaks this team can win more games!

GO VOLS!

Fine points. However, to be more direct, we will improve on both sides:
-when Cam, Wool and Hall are no longer getting minutes.
-when Miller is getting 25 minutes
-when Trae learns to go left and at least takes one hand away from a guard while on D
-when Skylar doesn't have to come in to play point
-when we have 3-4 guys on the court that can fill it up, which will lead to better spacing

he doesnt need to see the floor period.he got abused against COC,he gets beat every time on def.
all he is good for is a couple of 3s a game, other than that he offers nothing.

Agree with all of the points on this thread so far. If he would go zone on defense when Skylar is in the game, unless the opponent has a slow guy for him to guard, and improve the offense with better PG play and emphasizing going through Maymon, Skylar will free up more for the 3.

He was one of only 2 players to knock down some shots the last two games. He also penetrated the D while we were waiting on Trae, made a couple of good dishes inside and to the post, and he got a couple of boards and steals. He is basically the only guard that can make a pass to the post. He also doesn't get beat on D everytime either. He's not quick enough to laterally guard opposing teams pg's and sg's, but his main mistakes on D are allowing his man to beat him when he shifts his head looking for a pick. If there was more talk on the floor, he'd know where the pick is coming from.

Kid gets a lot of flak, but is of more benefit to the team than 2 or 3 four stars we have out there. If there was a better option, BP and CM would have played them.

Hard to argue any of that, though amazingly, some will. There are a few of us on this forum that have been saying much of the same for most of the season, especially in regards to the defense.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting different results. This could be the theme of our season thus far.

I dont know what game you was watching but he got used every single time he was in there. They were blowing by him like he wasnt even there.he hasnt been able to guard anybody since he has been here.he had 1 assist.

He's no more of a defensive liability than Hall, Trae, Cam or Mcrae and they all are on the same blow by level.

Cam plays much better defense than the rest of those you mentioned (though still average or slightly below). He gets beaten, but not nearly as much as McRae, Golden, or Hall (and he gets more rebounds when you consider his position. McRae should be getting as many as Tatum, but he hardly gets any).

I'd say McBee plays roughly as well as McRae on defense - he has less athleticism but makes better decisions, similar rebounds by position, etc. Having both of them out there with Golden is when our perimeter defense is at its worst (though it is sometimes our best offense (especially when Tatum can't make a shot)).

Don't disagree. Tatum's late and lazy closeouts kill me though. He gets more shots hit in his mug because he tends to just stick his arm out with half effort on the shot.

I agree, and from what I have seen of him, he thinks he is a better three point shooter than he is. He becomes quite a hog sometimes.

If McBee thinks he is a three point shooter its because he is. Through the Charleston game he has a .471% shooting average for three pointers.

Yes, that was a pretty good average but when I watch him, I don't like his presence. Some of the shots he takes are very questionable when he could have just made the easy pass.

To who. To Trae with a .386 average or to Tatum who has a .382 average. I think McBee has come around offensively and he hustles big time, but, does not have great lateral speed.

McBee's role on this team is to take open jump shots when he has them. He only took one shot I would consider to be questionable last game. It came late in the 2nd half with around 30 seconds left on the shot clock and he had a guy in his face.

38% is pretty darn good actually. Both Golden and Tatum are top-15 in the conference. I'll agree, it's not 47%, and if McBee is open, he should shoot. He is actually 3rd in the conference. Jordan McRae is 7th.

I was just trying to explain why McBee should shoot the
ball when he's open.
