I kind of assumed that's what happened (after seeing what they revealed right before that last scene) but I'm not sure.

I lean towards yes. He's there to do her dirty work, and there's that whole scene they replayed that he can't be/isn't a lawyer for some reason.

Wonder what the favor was he owed Sam.
