Twelfth Man

E. King Gill stands ready
The tradition of the Twelfth Man was born on the second of January 1922, when an underdog Aggie team was playing Centre College, then the nation's top ranked team. As the hard fought game wore on, and the Aggies dug deeply into their limited reserves, Coach Dana X. Bible remembered a squad man who was not in uniform. He had been up in the press box helping reporters identify players. His name was E. King Gill, and was a former football player who was only playing basketball. Gill was called from the stands, suited up, and stood ready throughout the rest of the game, which A&M finally won 22-14. When the game ended, E. King Gill was the only man left standing on the sidelines for the Aggies. Gill later said, "I wish I could say that I went in and ran for the winning touchdown, but I did not. I simply stood by in case my team needed me."

This gesture was more than enough for the Aggie Team. Although Gill did not play in the game, he had accepted the call to help his team. He came to be thought of as the Twelfth Man because he stood ready for duty in the event that the eleven men on the gridiron needed assistance. That spirit of readiness for service, desire to support, and enthusiasm helped kindle a flame of devotion among the entire student body; a spirit that has grown vigorously throughout the years. The entire student body at A&M is the Twelfth Man, and they stand during the entire game to show their support. The 12th Man is always in the stands waiting to be called upon if they are needed.

This tradition took on a new look in the 1980's when Coach Jackie Sherrill started the 12th Man Kick-Off Team composed of regular students through open tryouts. This 12th Man team performed very well and held opponents to one of the lowest yards per return averages in the league. Later, Head Coach R.C. Slocum changed the team to allow only one representative of the 12th Man on the kick off team. The 12th Man tradition also took musical form. The 12th Man sings this song after each game in which the Aggies are outscored.

Welcome to the Nation. I have a lot of respect for your program and your team. But I do not have any respect for Franchione. I don't blame you for taking him, but what he did to his former team was wrong.

Alabama cheating was wrong. I don't feel bad one bit for their school.

Granted, what Fran did was quite low-scumish to the players but school wise....screw bama

I am obviously bias!

However, if Alabama had not cheated then he would still be there! Also, if Fran had not convinced his Bama players to stay they would be worse and on probation right now.

Urban Myer is in a different but similar situation right now. It is always bad when a good coach goes to a different school. Bama fans are crazy and one of the reasons that fran did not return was becuse he was getting Death Threats. But no one seems to talk about that.

His family left in the middle of the night because of that.

Fran told numerous players that he was staying. Anyway you want to slice it, it is quite low class.

Not to beat a dead horse.

I think that he was trying to do what he thought was best for his family. I think that all of us might have made a similar choice.

I remember reading several articles about players saying he had told them he wasn't leaving and so forth.

Heck, I hate Alabama about as much as you hate Texas and I am saying this.

This is just one article I found

However, what is causing a major meltdown among Alabama fans is that while Fran preaches Loyalty, Accountabilty, and Trust to his players (who all decided not to tranfer after probation hit, although given the option to); he lied for the last few weeks about "signing the Alabama contract as soon as the season was over" and explicitly denied A&M rumors. The administration, asst. coaches, and players believed him until he boarded a one-way plane today.

Hey i didn't start with the coach integrity invective. I'm just saying if my coach was ratting out other schools to keep his ass off the NCAA hot seat, I wouldn't be throwing stones around my glass house is all.

Three things:

1. What would you suggest that he do? Urban Myer said on Gameday a few weeks back that he was not going to Florida and look how that turned out. Why is he not being grailed over the coals?

2. Bama was/is suffeing what I call the Notre Dame syndrome. They thought that no matter what nobody would ever leave the great state of Alabama for little old Texas A&M.

3. I am sorry for the players. They lost a great coach and they are on probation. The alumni (or who ever paid them) got what they (probably less than)deserved.

Using the Meyer situation is a complete joke. Meyer had informed not only his team but his players. He even told a recruit several WEEKS AGO about his possible departure. Fran did not of that and even had assitants still recruiting players he had picked while he flew to A&M.

So, there goes that idea.

Yes, Bama fans do that. Trust me, we know it a lot more then you do with the crap we have been put in the last few months.

Hey E. King. I agree with you about Fran, leaving Bama was a wise decicion on his part. BTW, I posted on TesAgs.com and ran into the 5 post limit . Nice board but the limit sucks. I emailed the Admin to see if they would waive the limit for the bowl game, but haven't received a response.

Excited about the Cotton Bowl, and fully expect a good game between two great programs.

Bama cheated and deserved what they got, period. But it is pretty gutless to run out on your players, and leaving it up to an assistant coach to tell them. But I will say that I do have a lot of respect for Carl Torbush. He is a fine man, and a good coach.
