HS football players target ref

I once saw a kid shove a ref out of the way while trying to make a tackle. They threw a penalty on him and kicked him out of the game. Later they said he shouldn't have been ejected.

I can't imagine a kid doing that to get even for a bad call. They should get a lifetime ban from football

So an assistant coach is now on "paid leave" for possibly "encouraging" the attack.

An assistant coach for John Jay High in San Antonio is alleged to have said, “this guy needs to pay for cheating us” before two John Jay players appeared to target and intentionally hit a football official during Friday’s game.

The coach, Mack Breed, has been placed on administrative leave following Northside Independent School District protocol, spokeman Pascual Gonzalez said during a news conference Tuesday and according to a summary of events provided by the school district to TEGNA partner KENS5.

Assistant coach’s comment might have led to hit on high school official | USA Today High School Sports | USA Today High School Sports

My question now is does this take "some" responsibility off the players for having done it since a coach might have told them to do it?

A coach saying that a ref needs to pay, imo, is not the same as instructing players to attack a defenseless person. That very well could mean that he needs to be held accountable to the athletics association.

Whether the red made racial comments or not , it's still not justified, there's better ways of going about it and becoming a "hero" after putting the racist ref on trial for making such comments, it was what the 2nd game of the season? cmon kids! With all this petty feelings getting hurt bs going around the kids should understand how to go about "revenge"
I would be so embarrassed as a Coah/teammate/ parent/ whatever the affiliation , it's worse than the Saints bounty scandal, these are kids! At their most influential part of their lives, I see my old football and swim coaches around town occasionally and always thank them for the life lessons and support no matter how bad I sucked, I was one of the smallest guys on the team but always played on the scout offense giving my all to Embarrass the starting LBs.
I hope the ref does what's right and the kids learn from this and be punished properly, sending them to jail may just make them future thugs, I don't know, but that was the hit heard around the sport. Coaches refs and players will take heed to this and the "good guys " on all sides should become role models and suppress this behavior.

Doesn't change anything in my book.

it shouldn't,surely they have enough sense not to hit an unsuspecting ref in the back

and if they don't,arrest there parents for being dumbasses

Until you know both sides of the story, don't pass judgement...

Even if the guy yelled out every single racial slur in the book, that doesnt make it right or change the fact that this was criminal. It dumb to suggest it should change things even if he did.
