1. I think this is a good point when the book is read by an adult with a base of life experiences to draw on so we should continue to keep the original copies available..

however,

2. the word itself isn't critical to the storyline and it's current meaning probably would've been offensive to MT. At a minimum he probably wouldn't have used it to avoid a distraction from an otherwise great story. I think it is okay to have version in grade schools that allows young people to enjoy reading without offending.

will the world really crumble if there are two clearly marked versions available?

not a big deal - just a slow news day on CNN.

I'm black and it don't offend me, I read it in high school in English class. The era that the book was written in I pay it no mind.

I gotta say, taking the word out kind of ruins the satirical theme. I understand, but it didn't bother me in high school.

Sure it is. It is literature and, to some degree, our heritage, in the eyes of one of our greater authors. We don't have to like that it's a ugly part of our history, but it is our history regardless.

There is already a kid version. I bought my 8 year old foster son the kid versions. It leaves out the word in question. The publisher put in there that the book is changed for their age group but tells the reader to read the real version when old enough. I told him when he finishes both I will take him to hannibal and learn more about Twain. I am against taking it out. It is a literary work and a great book in my opinion.
