Literature should give you a sense of what life was like when it was written and immerse you in the time period it was set in.
When the book was set (and written), that language was not uncommon.
1. I think this is a good point when the book is read by an adult with a base of life experiences to draw on so we should continue to keep the original copies available..
however,
2. the word itself isn't critical to the storyline and it's current meaning probably would've been offensive to MT. At a minimum he probably wouldn't have used it to avoid a distraction from an otherwise great story. I think it is okay to have version in grade schools that allows young people to enjoy reading without offending.
will the world really crumble if there are two clearly marked versions available?
