Has anyone ever noticed how many successful coaches have served a stint as an assistant in Fayetteville?

Pete Carroll would have to be the biggest idiot of all time to leave USC for any job, and particularly for a job in the NFL. Why go coach a team that can only draft one first round pick in a season? At USC, he can recruit 15 to 20 of the best players in the nation every year. He also doesn't have to fear being fired in a couple of years, and he doesn't have to put up with all of the prima donnas of the NFL.

That doesn't surprise me at all. It would be like if Alabama had hired Jim Mora.
Actually, Carroll would have been worse at the time. He had failed twice in the NFL. Garrett took some heat for hiring Tim Floyd after his NBA troubles. I believe that's turning out pretty well for him, also.

It's OK . . . Most Jets fans have blocked that out of their memories as well.

I see two sides to the possibilities for Carroll. The first is the salary cap. Ask Spurrier and Saban (though I don't know how hard Spurrier actually worked in Washington) how hard it is to put together an offense when you cannot recruit talent, and there is a limit to what you can buy these days. At USC he will have a top 10 recruiting class for the rest of his life without having to work 16 hours a day year round.

On the other hand, after having watched these NFL talent laiden teams over the past years, I think Carroll has learned to be a players coach. He has handled those egos with ease. If he can take what he has learned in that respect and coach loosely he may find some success. I think he would have to go where the talent is already in place. Pittsburgh, Arizona, and NYG seem to be further ahead than the Fins in that area.
