Hyams: UF vs LSU Probably Not Going To Happen

Don't know why this is such a big deal. The SEC will not let Florida or LSU in the championship game if they don't play. There is too much money involved in this sport for this to happen.

Rules say 8 conference games shall be played.
Say Florida wins 6.
Say we win 6.
We both won 75% of 8 games.
We beat Florida head to head, ergo we are champs.
Very straightforward, no conspiracies needed.

If I may, I'd like to offer a Florida perspective on this, and, frankly, one that's probably a bit different than the majority of my fellow Gators...

I don't want to go to Atlanta.

I didn't want to go to Atlanta last year. We had no business being there and I would actually argue it set our program back a bit. After the FSU disaster (27-2 in the Swamp, and our 2 points were gifted to us on a safety by FSU...our O didn't even score), we could've at least gone to a lesser bowl and played a more manageable opponent. That would've given us a chance to end the year on a positive note and create a little momentum heading into the final stretch of recruiting. Instead, after our FSU debacle, we went up to Atlanta to play an Alabama team we had zero chance of beating and got to be fodder on national TV...like Arkansas in 1995, Miss St in 1998, Mizzou in 2014, etc. What's the point of even being there if you have no chance to win? Then, we get slotted in the Citrus Bowl against a Michigan team that also overmatched us. 41-7 was the result...that's the last impression we made on recruits. 3 straight beatdowns to end the season. It was pointless to even be in those games.

Tennessee should have been in Atlanta. Bama fans may disagree, but I honestly think the Vols had a great chance to knock them off in the rematch on a neutral field. UT nearly pulled the upset in Tuscaloosa last year and a rematch would've been a much better game than watching Treon Harris stumble around against them. In the event UT didn't pull the upset, then they could've played Michigan in the bowl and it would've been a better match up. At minimum, the Vols wouldn't have embarrassed the conference with a 41-7 loss. Not saying UT would've been guaranteed to win, but they wouldn't have been blown out like we were.

So, having experienced that, I'd rather not do it again this year. We're just not there yet as a program - we need a couple more high quality recruiting classes (particularly along the O line). We aren't going to beat Alabama or Texas A&M. Tennessee is the one East team that can go toe-to-toe with anyone from the West, so let's get the Vols to Atlanta and show the East does still have a little punch, after all. I'm tired of the pundits calling the SEC East an "ACC division" and how the West could go 16-0 against us. I'm ready for some new storylines and an East resurgence. But us backdoor'ing our way into another overmatched SEC Champ game, where Bama or A&M destroys us, isn't going to help that image.

Therefore, this Gator will be pulling hard for the Big Orange this week. I wish you guys were healthier, but I still believe this UT team can beat the Tide. We might be rivals (and I'm not just trying to patronize you or blow smoke up your behinds since I'm on your board), but it's hard not to admire this Vols team - I honestly love the way they play the game and the way they never quit. So, please know that at least some Gator fans will be supporting the Vols this weekend, as crazy as that may sound. Our time will come again at UF, but, right now, it's UT's day and you are the East team that belongs in Atlanta.

Listened to the Low interview. He says he has been told they will play or will be ineligible essentially. Also said it takes 21 days to change any bylaws like win percentage to division record and presidents met at start of week. He said league will not let a team go with one less loss

Not that he knows, but that is what Finebaum said yesterday. "The league will not allow Florida to go to the SEC game if they don't make it up".....:)

right...

more like we think we'll get better ratings from FL./UA so lets just give them an extra week to rest up even though they're terrible.

Damn, you and my cousin in Gainesville are making it very very hard not to like the Gators !
Sorry but it's engrained in my dna and pretty sure it will never change but good luck with Mizzou !

Ive heard this before but come SECCG you'll be singing a different tune.

No gator should ever cheer for Tennessee and visa versa.

Chris Low told Swain this morning that either the game is played or the league office will tell the school's that they're not eligible to play for the SEC championship.

That's the way it should be!

I think you done went and broke the universe.

It's just reality.

I'll tell you another thing that concerns me about backdoor'ing into Atlanta: What if McElwain really isn't the answer here but the administration feels compelled to dump more money/extend his contract because he technically has been to Atlanta twice? It becomes more difficult to fire him if, say, we tank next year.

LSUs ad threw out the idea to go by division record to crown the division champions if the game does not get played

I suggested that a couple of days ago on one of these boards. I think it is an appropriate decision if it is true. Actually, I think I suggested that both teams would be awarded a loss for not playing.

I understand.
I agree with both of your posts. We just shoulder blame for last year. We had it right there and didn't capitalize, that's on us.
If we performed well enough to cause doubt who the better team was, I knew you guys were in trouble after losing your QB.

There was no doubt after that, Florida was going to be the sacrificial lamb to Bama.

If UF is indeed disqualified from playing in Atlanta if they don't make the game up, and they won't. Then, the SEC East is all but over. UGA, and MU already have two conference losses with Missouri still having to play UF and UT not to mention UGA still having to play UF which means UGA or MU will have at a minimum three conference losses. Even if UT loses this weekend, assuming they beat MU, they would have to lose four conference games.

UT could be the reason for another rule change. New rule will be that a team has to play the scheduled number of conference games to play in the championship game.

I don't think Arkansas beats the Gators and 50/50 vs Georgia We need to win Saturday

Arkansas will beat UF in Fayetteville and GA may beat them also..UF/GA is 50/50 but Ark will beat UF. If not for turnovers and 14 defensive points by the Ala defense Ark possibly wins that game. If Allen can pass for 400 yards against the Ala Secondary then God knows what he puts up on Florida. UF is trying to dodge LSU but they can't dodge playing at Arkansas.Long as we don't lose more than 2 we will be fine. Really think your record vs the Division you're in should determine who wins the East and West. Especially since we get Ala every year and it's not a balanced or even schedule for every team. But back to my point UF is an average at best team and will lose to Ark and possibly GA.. Hopefully they find a way to make up UF/LSU

My thoughts as well, if it comes to fruition. If Florida doesn't make up the game, it pretty much solidifies the east for UT.

So the jury is still out on JM? Would be interesting to hear what most gator fans are thinking of him about now.
