I’m a Barnes critic, but paying him $5 mil a year vs whatever Cuonzo made…

here is a steal IMO. The man is a mediocre coach to the bone.

Wonder if hacks like Pete Thamel, Dan Wolken, and other Martin defenders will label Mizzou fans racist for wanting him out?

As long as Barnes brings in quality and develops them, similar to Chandler, then I won't be critical about a couple down years, even 0.500. The man has proven his mettle.
As far as Cuonzo, I look at it like Pruitt and Butch in football. I didn't necessarily care for him while he's here, but as a man have no ill will to someone who moved on with their life.

By the players’ accounts, Cuonzo is a good man who develops boys into responsible young men. He’s been dealt some bad cards with player injuries, and other odd variables. He may or may not be a great coach, or develop into one. He was a bad fit here. I wish him the best. He seems like a good man.

Good grief let’s quit worrying about Coach Martin .. dang he isn’t here for a reason . Just drop it . We have post season play to worry about , not a past coach and his salary .

I remember the media roasting TN when Cuonzo went away mad. And last night validates CCM not being the right guy for UT. We get to talk about it.

This is the second time I’ve seen the racist remarks in regards to Cuonzo. I must be missing something. Anyone have a link or recap of what was said?

Nothing good about working in unison with national media hacks to paint a fan base as racist because they don’t like you as the coach, especially considering the same fan base having an affinity with the previous coach who is Jewish.

I think you are mostly right here . I do think that CCM is a good man who develops boys into responsible young men. As far as “great coach” I don’t think he is or will be . I think at the right mid major school he could be a solid coach that under the right circumstances has a S16 type run in him. I wish the man no ill will but I’m also glad that he is now Missouri’s problem to deal with .

I had no issues at all with CCM when he was here. He definitely didn't suck and the Sweet 16 run is a good memory. I do find it sad that 'racism' always seems to become an 'issue' anytime a black head coach is under-performing somewhere and there are calls for his ouster. I also find it sad that that has to be in the back of any athletic director's mind when they go to hire a black coach, though none would ever admit it. I wonder if the wokists are actually harming the chances of black coaches in the long run? Who wants to hire someone you can't get rid of without being called a racist?

It’s probably better to discuss one specific case rather than claim that something happens “anytime”. In this instance Cuonzo got threats on his personal family phone that involved racist language in many instances. A booster canceled his use of a plane for a recruiting trip, and used language we’d probably all find offensive in his reasoning. There’s a revisionist story that says that the plane was canceled because Cuonzo was interviewing. Anyone close to the situation will tell you that isn’t true. The players all said they felt like racism was part of the reason for his departure. 40,000 fans signing a “fire Cuonzo” petition is a ridiculous gesture racist or not. The guy obviously didn’t feel welcome. I think the game has passed him, but I could be wrong. I’d encourage you to take these situations on individually. There are many instances when a coach should be fired on let go on the merits of their coaching. There are other situations when there is something else afoot.

People that remember the sweet sixteen run seem to have forgotten the crappy basketball that UT fans endured that season. It was unbearable. Winning a play in game and two tournament games did not remove the bad basketball taste from my mouth that the season games left. In fact, it highlighted the fact the the talent was there, but the coaching was not.

was an ugly scene all around and CCM having to follow BP did not help. That obviously wasn’t something that CCM could help but it just was another mitigating factor contributing to things going sideways. The only “positive “ … if you want to call it that is that the petition and other nonsense fired up the team to fight for Cuonzo which resulted in a somewhat unlikely S16 run .

I still like CCM and probably always will, I get his teams weren’t amazing to watch, but he coaches defense amazingly and had solid record while here.

Not saying I’d take him over Barnes by any means but any hate or ill will is totally unjustified

One NCAA appearance; three NIT appearances which followed seven straight years of NCAA appearances. Don’t understand anyone being impressed with his coaching skills. The next two schools after he left UT, it appeared he had early recruiting successes only to to have crappy seasons for one reason or the other. Glad he’s gone, although we have had some stinkers as coaches in basketball worse then him. The next coach certainly wasn’t an upgrade.

Like a bunch of old hens brooding about the past. WGAS?

Agree.

Coach Martin was far from the best or worst coach we've had.
He wasn't one of my favorites as a coach but he didn't mail in his effort and he appeared to be a fundamentally good person, though extremely reserved.
The petition was a terrible idea and was handled poorly all around.
It is good that he left as he was unlikely to ever succeed long-term at UT.
It was a LONG time ago and I can't imagine why folks like to pick at scabs. Let it go. GBO!
