I'm not sure. If you can get to Hot Springs, NC in good time then this route is faster. Just follow my map once you get into TN.

we ended up doing 25 to 321 for the drive, nice scenic route, but going up there took a bit because people slowed down for the rain and we got behind a truck which is awful when there are so few opportunities to pass. Going back wasn't as bad.
