Their QB looked terrible half the time last year and they didn't seem very disciplined either. I wouldn't trade our QBs for theirs. Arch looks very overrated in his spring film, in my opinion. I think he got most of that 5 Star ranking from his name alone. I think we'd beat the stuffing out of them if we played them home or away this season.

Based on 247’s rankings they’ve had back to back top 5 classes. I think Texas is usually overrated too but I’m just assuming they’re going based on that. They’ll probably have a decent team either this year or the next unless their coaches are incompetent.

I don't entirely get it, either.

One part of it is, they're Texas. Historic program. I mean, we benefitted from that as well, several years into our Dark Ages.

But another part, and perhaps the unexplainable part, is the sports media love for Sarkasian. Dude is like an even more doofus-y Lane Kiffin, and has kind of followed a similar career path complete with crashing and burning at USCw. And, as with Kiffin, the media types seem to cling to the belief that he's a future hall of fame coach on the verge of breaking into greatness.

Well, the media have mostly given up on Kiffin at this point. But they're still holding a torch for Texas Steve.

*shrug* Yeah, I don't get it either.

Go Vols!

It’s an annual
August thing.

I'm in the belly of the beast lol.

They are talking. Frequently and loudly.

I'm not seeing it. I just don't see Ewers being the generational guy they seem to be convinced he is. Decent enough QB I guess, but I wouldn't put him anywhere near a top 10 right now.

Things could change and I may be eating my words in a few weeks, but just don't see much in recent history for all the optimism. Will they take a bit of a jump this year-probably. These fools are talking guaranteed playoff birth this year though lol.

I see a 9-3 ish type season for the Longhorns this year.

It’s texasss. They are always back!!!

Since A&M left the B12, texasss has had a worse record in an easier conference. Lost to KU multiple years.

They’ll go 8-4 and lose to multiple teams they shouldn’t. Sark in the dark hasn’t ever won 9 games.

They’ll be a worse MState in the SEC.

They will drop back a few spots when Bama blows them out.

Here's my take on it.

You touched on part of it with your first statement.

It's also the possibility for the feel-good story of the year. Coach who has battled alcoholism (quite well, thankfully) gets another opportunity to lead a major college football program back to greatness. And it could happen with the next generation of one of college football's first families leading the way. The media will hype that as long as they possibly can.

Sad thing is they may actually do better. Texas is that archetype "play to the competition" team. They tend to get up for big teams but lose to weaker teams. Texas in the SEC would likely beat or play Alabama and LSU close but then lose to Vandy, UK, Missouri, or someone like that.

Hyping Texas up is good for business. Gigantic fanbase, ton of money. They get similar treatment to Notre Dame in that if they actually do appear pretty good any given year, they'll get elevated to a national championship contender-type of team.

I actually do get the optimism to a certain degree. They should have beaten Alabama in Week 2, and all of their losses were one possession games. They've got a returning QB from that team, plus they've recruited well the last few years. I could totally see them winning the Big 12 this year - one last time before they head out.

Texas had Bama beat last year until the bogus roughing the passer penalty negated the safety. That, and the cheap shot that knocked Ewers out of the game. He was lighting Bama up with the deep ball. Much like Hooker to Hyatt.
I do agree Bama should have lost in Texas no doubt. I think the Big12 was out to screw them any way possible of it was close, after it was announced they were leaving for the SEC. But with the venue change to Tuscaloosa, I don’t give Texas much of a shot in Tuscaloosa. We have all seen how much Bama gets away with home. Just look at the aTm game bama got away with after aTm was cheated on some calls inside the Redzone. Hell Bama got away with running 7 seconds off the clock that left aTm only enough time left for 1 play instead of possibly 2.

How exactly was it a cheap shot?

One last time? Seriously ? They've won what, 2 in 30 years? Vince Young years?

Texas is a big state and has several D1 schools. The whorns are the big fish in that pond so they sell the most newspapers, magazines, clicks, etc. The whorns control the TX media, if the media wants access they have to play the game.

That all feeds into the national media, recruiting rankings, and on and on. They've been doing it forever and are very good at it.

Pretty impressive really but it creates a fake facade around the team and they rarely live up to expectations.

IIRC, and I've slept since then, the Bama player put his shoulder into Ewers' sternum and drove him into the turf. Football is a rough sport, but if you're going to call roughing the passer on Texas, call it on Bama too. Both plays directly affected the outcome of the game. I may be a little biased about Bama privilege after watching it for so many years though. I still say the Bama hit that took out Tony Robinson was dirty.

Well, since Tennessee is the only UT (and Bama won’t lose to texass), they’d only lose to one UT.
Well, if you wanted to be extremely optimistic, Bama could potentially lose to you guys twice this season. In Tuscaloosa and then in Atlanta. I don’t see it happening (no offense intended), but it is possible.

Your memory is awful. They did call roughing on Bama on the play Ewers got hurt. And they intially threw a flag for targeting on the non-safety play, but waved it off on review. But they also ruled that Young got rid of the ball before he was down, so there was no safety either way.
