I forgot how close Tennessee was in 2006.

They flat out choked against Florida and LSU, but they were a couple of bad calls. They win those two, do they win a rematch against Arkansas? Do they jump Michigan to play Ohio State?

But then again, maybe they were good, but not great. Alabama and Kentucky were lackluster wins. Oh,and so was Air Force.

That team was awesome. Refs robbed Marvin Mitchells pick 6 v UF 9r we win that easily.

We didn’t choke vs LSU. Meacham bailed out Crompton a couple of times. We were lucky to be ahead. And if not for a blown call on a fumble recovery, we still would’ve won. Ainge or no Ainge, Arkansas was beating us.

I think Ainge left the LSU game early on and Crompton played almost the whole game.
I was at the LSU game, terrible seats. LSU will throw things when they win.
Crompton tried and looked good. He ran the ball for a tone-setter for his attitude and played hard. I remember him rolling out every play and just being okay against a solid defense. I don't remember anything about Russell but I know he was there. I remember their long drive at the end when they scored. I remember it being a tough game for Foster. Pretty much took most all the 4th quarter and then took the lead. His big arm-arm never really was on display against Tennessee that night. With Erik in, Tennessee probably wins that game. The score was close enough that he would have made a difference.

Yes we were. 3 points away from a 11-1 season. That would have given us a rematch with Arkansas. I think it’s possible we could have gotten them in a rematch. So we were closer than you think.
How many 9-4 teams other than the 2006 Vols would be considered close? We didn’t even win the SECE that season. Solid team but not championship contenders. Last year’s team along with the 2001 squad were close imo.

The LSU game was stolen with the non-fumble call. The Florida game was too, with the garbage rouging call that wiped out an INT. Arkansas whipped us, but we were without Ainge. That was a season of what could have been.

What bit Fulmer in his last few years was the early West Coast OOC games. He lost both of them in embarrassing fashion and it started Tennessee out on the wrong foot in both 2007 and 2008.

The 2007 rebounded but not before laying a major egg against Florida in one of their biggest blowouts (the first 3-4 games of 2007 looked like Tennessee would follow trajectory of 2008 team and collapse).

2008 team clearly let the UCLA loss impact their season. Clay Travis wrote a book about it that someone bought me one year for Christmas and I actually read it.

Skip to 2:11:12 if it doesn't start there.

This Lsu loss ranks right up there with the 2001 game. They have absolutely been a pain to us prior to last season. The 2010 game was bad too. Have never seen anything like that foolishness on the collegiate level. The 07 championship was right there for the vols as well. So glad the shift is moving towards the vols now.

We never should’ve scheduled that game, let alone placed between 2 top 10 opponents. Disciplined opponent who runs the triple option and cut blocks all day = definition of a trap game.

games like Air Force are made 8-10 years prior to being played. Rankings are unknown when games are contracted.

Ainge was injured the week prior to LSU versus South Carolina
He was injured versus South Carolina, but I am almost certain he started and played 1 or 2 series vs LSU and then they decided he couldn’t go .

I remember there was some controversy with that game but can't remember. Can you remind me?
Ainge went out of the game after he was almost tackled in the end zone and threw a crazy desperate pass. Then they brought Rick Clawson in the drama was we were down I think like 24 points and Clawson had transferred from LSU came back and won us the game.
edit: maybe I’m wrong on what year that was.

You’re thinking of the 2005 UT vs LSU game. They’re talking about the 28-24 loss to LSU in 2006.

Good takes.

We had a 31-17 lead against Air Force, and Tennessee was in control. Ainge threw an interception, AF scored twice before missing a two point conversion. We all remember the Inky injury, but Harrill had a season ending injury as well. Even though it wasn't life threatening like Inky, it did hurt the team a little more for the rest of the season.

But Bama win was very underwhelming. Defense won the game.

That was the year before. 2005. Gerald Riggs running it in for the win in OT.
