I'll start this by saying that i'm a huge Dooley supporter. I understands everyone's frustration with the team, but coach Dooley is our current coach and that means he has my support no matter what. I'm also a little older than some people and grew up with coach Fulmer. Say what you wanted about Phil, he is the definition of VFL and loves the program. In Phil, we also had a long tenure coach and we didn't have to worry about these coaching changes.
Anyways, back to the upcoming coaching change that will probably take place at the end of the season. As I stated, i'm a supporter of Dooleys, but this team's defense is historically bad and something has to change and I cant see Dooley keeping his job and UT bringing in a 3rd defensive cord in 3 years.
So that leaves us with needing a new Head Man and Vol fans screaming for John Gruden. As someone that it tired of seeing new faces on the coaching staff each year, I think hiring Gruden would be a major mistake. I think UT needs to try and and find a candidate that will be with the program for a decade.
Lets be real, that's not John Gruden! While he would be an amazing recruiter and would definitely help the program get back on its feet, it wouldn't last more than 3 or 4 years at the most. Gruden in a NFL coach and NFL teams will continue to pull at his coat tails the rest of his life and eventually he will return to The League. Does anyone really think john Gruden is going to put up with boasters and players parents storming into his office crying about their sons playing tine situation. Good god, no!
UT needs to look long term with the new coaching change and try and find a candidate that can turn in a Fulmer type tenure so that our program can restore its stability.
Stability is the key to success in College Football.
