Several of us around here have constantly bemoaned the mediocrity of Pearl's assistants. Well, I've got a possible answer. It is apparent that Pearl is philosophically wedded to his system. Thus, it would only make sense to add a guy who coached said system as well as anyone ever has. That guy? Former Cleveland State coach and current Indiana Pacers scout Kevin Mackey. The move works on two levels. First, it gives Pearl the kind of experienced tactician that most quality staffs possess. Also, it would play well with the media, thus getting the program some positive press. Everyone loves a good redemption story and Mackey returning to the college game would be right up there. Not sure if he'd be interested, but it can't hurt to ask.

Couldn't agree with you more Hatvol. I am so sick of watching Pearl Ball. Pass it around the perimeter till the shot clock runs under 10 seconds and jack up a trey, MONEY!:dance2:

Same as it ever was. On top of that, my flight out tomorrow has already been cancelled. Oh, joy. The thought of an extra day in Newark has my heart aflutter.

We all know the truth hat, you've clearly fallen in love with Newark. Congrats on your newfound home.

I have often heard NJ called the 'Armpit of America'. Would you agree?

I've been there and all parts of Louisiana. I'd say one is an armpit and the other is the exit door to the gastrointestinal tract.

Thoughts?

Oh yeah, and on your thread, how strong is Pearl's connection to Mackey?

Mackey got his start under Tom Davis.

Does he actually believe in the Flex or the bastardized Pearl Flex?
My guess is that his years around the pro game would be a major influence on anything he advocated if he returned to the sidelines.

If we need anything, it is competency in the half court sets.

With your connections/insight, do you think Hamilton et al would be willing to spend the money to bring in the type of dynamic assistants CBP needs to push us over the top?

It seems like a successful BB program needs 4 things from their coaching staff:

1. A Recruiter
2. A Motivator
3. A Marketer
4. An X's and O's guy

(not in any particular order)

So we know Pearl does #3 and #1 well, besides Jones and his recruiting, what do the rest of his lackeys actually bring to the table?

Tony Jones is being paid very well. UT will spend the money if Pearl asks for it.

So, then back to the question at hand- What do the rest of Pearl's staff actually bring to the table?

Forbes is alleged to be a defensive guru. Pearl clams Shay is a brilliant scout. I beg to differ.

The problem, or at least a problem, with our staff is that none of our coaches actually look like basketball players (maybe Jones).

With Kansas you have Danny Manning. With Memphis, you have that guy from Pitt, but we have two fat white guys, a pimp cane worthy black guy, and a head coach who lives to tan.

Does perception mirror reality to the kids they are pursuing? I mean, come on, you're telling me when kids see Forbes they think, hey, that slow, fat white guy can teach me on ball defense?

Let's not kid ourselves (not to insinuate you are).

I might be willing to believe Shay is a good scout. Forbes is a fat, bald, know-nothing, useless coach.

Can you get a head coach to fire an assistant ala Mark Richt forced to this year at UGA? Can Hamilton say, Forbes sucks, bring in Mackey?

Forbes is the biggest waste of money ever spent at the University of Tennessee. Jason Shay on the other hand, I personally brings more to the table and works harder than anyone else on the staff from what I have experienced in practices.

Hat,

Curious on your thoughts about Damon Archibald. A friend of mine coached with him at one of his previous spots and I know that he interviewed the same year Forbes did. It was my understanding that a deal was almost finalized, but there were some allegations of 'AA problems that arose at the time about the staff he was on at ISU (never materialized) and they took Forbes.

You may have covered this back then, but I have only been on here for about a year. Just curious if you know much about him.
