I keep thinking there is going to be a moment it clicks for Joe, but maybe I’m just wrong.

Most of its IMO wasn't Miltons fault if a D1 Receiver can get both hands on the ball he should catch it. Yes, there were some throws behind receivers some too high but if you are a top D1 receiver you make those catches when they're on your hands you make the QB look good. Sometimes the QB throws you open makes you look good it's a give and take, Don't go down the road of blaming it on one person it is a team game.
You are right on some of those throws, but Joe's job is to be on target. If he is off target he is making those throws harder. They may be catchable, but he isn't making it easy.

HH was a special talent. Joe Milton doesn’t have to be HH, but he needs to be better. If he comes out sharp, he doesn’t play the 2nd half. Instead, the Vols put their vertical passing game away and decided to win with horizontal passes and screens.

This may serve us well down the road when we fake screens and run deep, but at this point, could Milton hit the wide open deep ball?
Joe will be up and down this season. Hooker was a special downfield passer and made it look easy. Still Joe will probably throw for 2,400 yards with 25 TDs and maybe 3 INTs. Heupel’s system makes even badly thrown balls mostly safe. We still probably have a higher ceiling with Joe rather than Nico, just because of experience. If you bench Joe, then you might lose him mentally. You have to lose 2 or 3 games before you go to Nico. The WRs played like crap yesterday too. Only 2 or 3 balls were uncatchable, the rest were drops.

Joe will be fine, and has completed plenty of deep throws. He has been quite inaccurate at times and the receivers have dropped both easily catchable and also difficult passes. He still overthrows, but not to the extent of 2021.

The main thing Milton does well is protect the football—ZERO interceptions as a Vol. He either puts it where the receiver can catch it or no one can, lol.

Joe hasn’t looked great, but I think people are overreacting.

UF always has athletes. Don't know if they've got DBs like UGA had last season, but we don't have Hooker, Hyatt and Tillman either. If I'm UF, I stop the run at all costs and put it on Joe Milton to make winning plays, and I'm not sure our OL can give Milton the time he needs to make those big plays. I also attack Hadden early and often and continue going at him for 4 quarters.
Hadden ranks #1 in the nation for passes defended.

Well the good news is that we don't have to wait 500 years like we did with JG for the rules to force him out. I can go through this year with Milton especially with Nico in the wings. By mid season we will know for sure.

The kids under tremendous pressure

All the rat poison as Saban calls it.

The pressure he must feel if/when he ever reads these forums fails in comparison to the pressure in his head.

I'm a fan. I have faith in him and all fingers crossed

And God Bless Josh Heupel

At this point I really believe he is what he is - he’s not going to sudden morf into something radically different. I do hope to see some incremental improvements and one I saw yesterday was his QB draw for a TD. Yesterday, unlike in the opener against Virginia, he actually waited just a second before he ran so it was an actual draw play and not just a direct snap run. He also ran hard like he knew he was bigger and badder than the defenders - and that’s something I hope he can do more of In the future. He’s built like a DE and needs to run north south and run over DBs and LBs. He’s more of a FB than a TB.

I hope he can improve on his reads and decision making but it’s not like he is grossly failing. I watched the Bama QB throw two picks last night because he flat out can’t read a zone defense - Joe is much better in that department. One thing I would like to see him do more on first and second downs is to pull the ball down and run if he can get five yards. First, five yards is a good gain if the D is going to give it to you and second, after he does it a few times the underneath defenders - LBs - won’t be dropping as deep so our receivers will be easier to hit. I know Joe wants to make the pass on every play but it’s like he wants to win the game on every play vs playing to win each play.

But - and we do have to understand - it was probably a coaching decision to not do very much last night So we were very basic. And his receivers didn’t help him early. On every 3rd and short we ran the ball to the same place and the AP guys appreciated us doing that. Have to hope we can add a little more variety next week in the swamp.

Like I said, Joe is who he is and I hope he has a career game next Saturday. The whole team needs to step up so we beat the Gators in the Swamp. I hope Jaylen Wright has a Travis Stevens type game.

Milton's main problem is his inability to throw receivers open. He waits till they are open before throwing which gives the defender a better shot at breaking up the play. If his play remains the same this won't be a very successful year.

Did you watch last week ? Seriously all the clamoring and rediculous takes are annoying af and make you look dumb. He hit both throws over 40 last week. One was an obvious ***** TD that Keyton dropped. Maybe our coaches saw how AP played and yes they were late several times hitting Milton. There was no reason to drop him back in hindsight to cover a damn point spread. We won, we were sloppy. We are really lucky that game didn't turn into a brawl.

I hope he puts it together, but there's a good chance this is just who he is. He has been this guy since Michigan. Some guys never figure it out.
All the physical talent in the world but just doesn’t have the intangibles. He really has no feel for the game, He’s our qb and I am going to support him but I don’t think he’s the guy.

What's crazy is Joe looked like Joe from the Clemson game when we played Virginia outside of a couple of throws. Idk what triggered his inaccuracies against aspu.

Maybe we should change the thread to “The Quick and the Dead” . We sure are hard on ourselves around here. We are never happy.

Milton is all about confidence. If he plays tight he looks awful. He has seemed to regress since least year but then again most of the time we saw him was during mop up duty when the game was won already and no pressure was on him
Honestly, I really hope things click for him and he has a solid game/season. Mainly because is keeps the momentum of the last 2 years going strong but also because I don't want a true freshman tossed into the SEC deep end behind this OL. Let's face it...the next 5 games will be no cake walk. Nico might be all he's hyped to be in time, but this schedule behind this OL is a tall, tall ask for the kid especially since he was supposed to get a lot of live reps against the 2 cupcakes we started the season against. Funny how that never seems to work out at Tennessee.

Unfortunately, I don't expect things to change for Milton because he's had multiple years and multiple coaching staffs and no one has been able to find that button much less push it so far. Still we really need him to play well enough to keep the starting job assuming the OL can keep him upright and healthy all year. There have been a few busts that, had they been against an SEC caliber defense/athlete, might have ended his season before it really got started. By now, everyone knows who Milton is. The challenge is to construct a game plan that will minimize his impact on the game and still allow this offense to function and be successful.

I agree with your concerns to an extent but these receivers have to be better as well. They go hand in hand. I do feel heupel has limited the playbook due to inconsistencies from both position groups thus far. OL has played fine IMO. Only one bust has occured and that was due to a whiff from Dayne Davis in which center is not his natural position. Hopefully getting Cooper back resolves that.

Cooper would help a great deal, but is he ready for UF after being shelved for so long? Not sure he's going to be an upgrade at this point in the season.

As for the WRs, it almost looks like the JG years where the wideouts we're going through the motions because they knew the ball was unlikely to be catchable. I'm also prone to comparing Milton to Hooker in the huddle. Hooker seemed focused and confident....in total control. Milton seems to be a good kid and great in the locker room but is he a guy that will lift his team in crunch time? I'm not so sure.

Off game.. it happens.. the offense was a little flat, but the defense looked really good to me.. we did that a lot last season, one side of the ball struggles and the other side bails you out, but if you win, who cares? 😂

I think Milton takes to long to settle into a game and he tends to dwell on plays that he missed. If he connects early and often he plays well.
