Wonder how many of the 3s will move up to 4? 2 or 3 maybe?

We will get at least 12 4 stars and probably more.

Based on the averages of past classes and talk of our current commits: Smith, Randolph, and Coleman will end up a 4-star. Also, if you go on offer sheets Kerbyson should be a 4 star. I'm guessing we have 5 4-star players on in the class so far.

Then when you see who we are in the running for, we should end up with at least 12.

WOW, are people really arguing that quantity is bad? i havent been on here long, and i may not know much, but i remember not long ago (2 months) where people were saying that we didnt have enough recruits committed to us. now the same people are complaining we have too many? from what i've seen, we have gotten commitments that fill our needs. theres an old saying that says its better to have a good plan today than a great plan tomorrow. Dooley not gonna wait around hoping for 5 stars at every position. His plan is working by filling needs with decent players, and now it seems that we are getting quality players as well. im afraid some people would still be complaining if we had a top 5 class at this moment.

Wow. You completely missed the point of the discussion.

I agree, and before someone takes what I posted and misinterprets it---I would LOVE to have a top 5 class year in and year out, I just don't think that that automatically translates to wins. Granted it increases the talent level and, thereby, makes it "easier" to win, but it doesn't give your team a pass, you still have to coach them--see Les Myles for example.

I think the recruiting services have a decent success rate but if a coach uses no other criteria other than what an internet recruiting service says about a prospect and doesn't give each player, at the very least, the eyeball test--then you end up with a class like UT's '07 class.

THAT is what got Fulmer fires, IMO--he got lazy. That's one reason why I really REALLY like the way this staff operates, they're really doing their homework on these prospects and getting to know them before they'll accept a commitment--as much as any coaching staff can, of course.

I agree with most of that. The best talent usually wins but it can be wasted. Les Miles as you say does waste talent IMHO.

I'll take that.

Agree. There will always be a handful of coaches that underachieve with elite talent, just because they aren't very good coaches for one reason or another or have no control of their assistants or dont hold them accountable, etc...

It can be for a variety of reasons. Miles is certainly one in the present, and I think Fulmer was one and Bowden in his later years fit that bill as well. It's getting to the point where Richt is soon to be added to that list.

I think this staff is getting players that have great upside. They are ahead of the curve and getting 3 and 4 star propects that will perform at a 4 and 5 stars at the next level. Not 5 and 4 star prospects at are really 3 star overhyped risky recruits.

This staff is weeding through the tape and know the player potential for when they come to UT. This should equate to fewer none performers and build the depth that is needed for the future of the program.

Keep up the good work Coach Dooley!!!!!!!!

Wow. You completely missed the point of the discussion.

I think it is completely irrelevant at this point, but since you made a new thread to point it out, just cracking the Top 25 with 14 commitments isn't saying much. Most schools rated behind Tennessee are well below that number of commitments at this point. You are always going to be highly rated at this point in time if you have that many commitments. This is why Scout shouldn't even bother posting their recruiting rankings this early. It's completely misleading and irrelevant.

Its purely a case of quantity at this point

The ranking right now is completely irrelevant because the number of commits completely skew it. Tennessee has over 60% of their class in the fold already. Most schools have only 25-35% complete. If all the schools out there had 14 commitments right now Tennessee's ranking would be much lower.

maybe i wasnt addressing what you were discussing, but i was addressing what these guys were discussing.

Of the other 24 teams ranked above us only 4 have fewer players committed than us and of the 4, all have only 1-2 fewer than us. Most have several more than us. Keep up the good work guys. GBO!

Again, nobody said anywhere on there that quantity is "bad". They were speaking about it relative to the current class rankings on Scout.

So you did miss the boat.

UT is tied for 31st with 3.00 star average per recruit.

Other teams tied with UT are Ga Tech with 9 recruits, Boston College with 8 and UCLA with 7.

Teams ahead of UT in star ranking per recruit with fewer commits.

Nebraska has a 3.08 average with 13 recruits
Va Tech has a 3.09 average with 11 recruits
USC has a 3.09 average with 11 recruits
Missouri has a 3.18 average with 11 recruits
Oregon has a 3.20 average with 10 recruits
Michigan St. has a 3.23 average with 13 recruits
Michigan has a 3.30 average with 10 recruits
Florida has a 3.31. average with 13 recruits
Penn St. has a 3.50 average with 4 recruits
Miami has a 3.50 average with 6 recruits
Cal has a 3.57 average with 7 recruits

I think Scout is poor in terms of acknowledging talent but since people have elected to use it as a metric to evaluate progress I'll use the same.

The question is how many schollies are being offered and if let say the number is 26 (like last year) then 5 out of the 12 need to be top 100 players 1 needs to be just a four star and 2 need to be 3 stars and the rest 2 stars.

Out of the remaining uncommitted 5 stars according to scout's board I do not see one that UT will get.

Of the top 100
There is Arnett, Wright, Richardson, Tuitt as possibles.

So not going to make 5 top 100 this year unless things change dramatically.

Remember that accoridng to Scout the 2010 class was ranked 16th with 26 commits.

So when comparing the two it appears that 2011 will fall short of 2010 and UT like I've said numerous times will struggle to make the top 20.

For you star gazers, the player ratings will change as these recruits play their senior seasons, Also, the top 25 listing as of now, doesn't include Pat Martin on Scout. They don't have him on our board yet. So we could possible be a few more spots up.

ESPN, which has some of the best scouts in the country, has us looking the best with Kerbyson and Martin both 4 stars, and Martin an 80. Some of those 3's will turn into 4's, and some of the 4's will turn into 5's. But remember, injuries and changes of hearts are very likely... Football season is just beginning and these guys are gonna get a lot of looks from recruiters during the year, which means more offers, and more wavering decisions....

Don't count your chickens before they hatch...

That being said, I think regardless what happens, Dooley and Staff will bring in a great class to feel some very empty cupboards.

GBO!

Prospect rankings always change throughout the season, but prospects drop as well as jump. Who knows if Tennessee will have some drop or jump. Other schools will also have players drop and jump.

Scout is including Pat Martin's commitment. He's on their commit list and their total number of commits are factored into the current ranking.

And that's basically what I said, these recruits ratings will change, but I guess you had to make that extra clear...

Sorry, when I looked earlier, when I typed my response, he was marked as committed to Tennessee but wasn't on the list yet, I'm almost positive.

They would! Someone said in another post, if we had 4* committing to us they would find something else to complain about. Some people will never be happy no matter what and you just have to ignore or laugh at them.

The good thing is, and this is probably what Dooley is thinking, We can recruit 3 and 4 stars, let the other schools fight for the very few 5s, and coach our 3 and 4 star guys up.

One summer with Coach Wylie and I'd say that size alone on some of these guys gives them another star, look how much G.Jones has changed since last year, he's huge.

What I was making extra clear is that prospects can drop as well as jump.

A lot of people on here assume all Tennessee commits will jump, when they could just as easily drop when rankings are updated.

Probably a more accurate indicator of where we are right now in terms of talent is the average per recruit as you've pointed out. A lot of these star ratings will change before NSD and some of the teams with a great average will come back to the rest of the pack also. It is all about filling needs with the best talent we can and Dooley has hit the mark so far. We're not going to be a top ten class likely but will have superior contribution from these guys over some of our recent past classes.

It was just like people ranting on here about Kentucky being rated higher than Tennessee a few weeks ago. Kentucky had a hell of a lot more commitments so of course they are currently going to be rated higher. Some of the same people pumping the current #25 ranking were the same ones a few weeks ago downplaying UK being ahead of Tennessee because of their high number of commits. Can't have it both ways.

Unless you are in the Top 10 at this point, the rest of the rankings are pretty much quantity based and nothing more.

Agree on the rankings being irrelevant. 17 of the schools above UT have more commits at this point.
