I may get ripped for this one... but if UT doesn't get a great HC....

I have no problem hiring an up and comer. It's worked plenty well in the past for plenty of big name schools. Most of the "big names" people seem to want are has-beens anyway.

Dooley wasn't an "up and comer". Dooley was a mid major loser no one else wanted to hire.

In terms of the OP, what he's asking for is basically just Gruden. I can't see anyone else coming here who could immediately improve recruiting, unite the fanbase, sell tickets, and give us a real shot at winning quickly.

I totally agree with this.

I'd love to get Gruden, but I'm prepared for an up-and-comer like Charlie Strong. Most of the great hires over the past few decades have been coaches that people weren't completely sold on.

I just wanted to add that the reason I'm against an up-and-comer is because of where this program is now.

I think that, generally speaking, up-and-coming coaches are the way to go. You don't have to pay as much as you do for a huge name and you often get a lot of passion from them.

But I'm not sure if this program/fanbase can take another 3-5 years of disappointment. Years of bad decisions from others have put Hart and the Boosters in a precarious situation.

Yeah, I don't have much faith in Hart's ability here. But, I don't see anyone setting us back any further than what Dooley has done. Pretty much any hire is going to be an improvement, but that said, we're so bad now that a little improvement just isn't enough. Most fans don't want to spend several years mired in mediocrity, just because it's a cut above the total disaster we just witnessed. Not when you're charging prices like you're a big time program.

I'm not sure how you could have any reason to doubt Hart - I think everything he's said and done to date have been spot-on.

I do agree though that we need more than improvement now..... the cost of being a fan is getting prohibitively expensive for a mediocre program at best.

If its a legitimate up and comer I'd be at least interested, depending on who it is.... Just some scrub like Dooley that had no business at a school like UT will cripple us even further, possibly for a decade or more.

Who do you consider a legitimate up and comer?

Why, just out of curiosity, would you say this?

Like most of us on here he is disgusted at what he has seen this season.. He doesn't know anything (again like most of us) and is just being a Debby Downer...

I am a huge Vol fan and I live in the great state of... ALABAMA. I have watched more Alabama games against my will than I would like.

With that said Alabama followed the same path that we have went down.

From our last 4 coaches I will draw similarities in their last 4.

Gene Stallings: Won the National Championship and retired to spend more time with his disabled son.

Philip Fulmer: National Championship, Got complacent should have retired, got fired.

Mike Dubose: Scumbag

Lame Kiffin: Scumbag

Mike Shula: Stabilizing coach that wasn't ready for the big time.

Derek Dooley: Stabilizing coach that wasn't ready for the big time.

Nick Saban: Doing a really good job.

Tennessee's next coach: Needs to be to Tennessee what saban is to Alabama. I'm not saying he needs to come in and win 2 national championships in 4 years, I'm saying he needs to be that type of big hire.

He never coached a game.

And that is 4 and 4 if you add our new coach. People forget that Alabama was in the same position in the early 00's that we are in now.

And over moderation is for little girls. Dont see why my post gets moved into a thread that has nothing to do with what I posted. FPMFAHDSmods

...I'm not sure how excited I'll be for UT football next year. And I'm certainly not alone. This fanbase is in full-out apathy mode.

After Kiffin & Dooley, I don't think this program can roll the dice with another 'up and comer'. They need the kind of hire that instantly sells season tickets, unites the fanbase for the first time since the early 2000's, and most importantly: Wins games.

Hart's press conference gave me reason for optimism that they are going to bring in a proven coach (and not Petrino who is a scumbag).

Strong - no.
Patterson - no.
Golden - no.
Smart - no.

These are all fantastic coaches, but not proven enough to get everyone on board.

Patterson isn't proven?? Glad you're not relevant

Debby Downer.... That's me! Agreed, i don't know any more (or less) than most anybody else here other than what we've seen this university do (over the last couple of AD's...) when it comes time to hire a new coach... Lowball and settle for an also ran kind of guy or promote from within and hope for the best.... If it goes differently and we hire a guy that (almost) everyone can be happy with I'll be the first to admit I was wrong this time but I've been right too many times in the past 25+ years....
