cast in the role of defender for any of the Pearl family. However, the comments the last day or so about Steve has placed me in that position. He's not playing because he's the coaches son. He's playing because Kenny Hall can't rebound or defend and Renaldo Woolridge can't do anything. Does he have any business in an SEC rotation? Absolutely not. However, he didn't assemble the roster that necessitates him playing. He at least shows up and scraps every night. That's a whole hell of a lot more than I can say for a number of his more talented and highly touted teammates. On the list of this team's problems, Steve Pearl's minutes rank about #466.

I agree. He plays as hard as he's capable of playing. Not his fault his teamates are a bunch of up and down schizo freaks.

Exactly right. People that can't see that simply don't know basketball.

Did hatvol just defend pearl? I don't think that we have to worry about another game this year because the world is going to end tomorrow.

I did my fair share of Steven Pearl bashing several games back when he was getting regular playing time, but have since been very impressed with his hustle and defense. He's still a liability on offense, but not any worse than Woolridge is.

Hat Vol I'm impressed. While you still took multiple jabs at his dad, your actually standing up for Steve. I thought you hated everything about the present state of ut bball, but here you are defending it.

Just joking obviously just gave you a chance to point out how horrible our coach is. I guess he'll have do go undefeated till he's any good. We got our a@@es handed to us by Florida. It happens, but we are still a top 25 team and will still be going to the big dance.

I still hope renaldo is in the gym wokng n pdashooting. If we are to beat Kentucky then I think Renaldo has to contribute something. He is capable but still a long shot at this point. Hey he was fortunate at home against Kansas maybe with effort he can give something of value. I agree with Hats OP but unfortunately Stevenisnt going to cut the mustard for bigger and better things. he just helps us not get embarrassed but not his fault. he understands he shouldnt be playing but has no choice. Seeing as he has no choice he gets after it the best way he knows how with physicality.

He plays over his head for his abilities. The number one problem with the team is no more than 2 people per game have a good night. If 4 or all 5 players on the court just turned in a consistent effort they would win games. Last night for example Hopson finally scored but Chism decided to go all Karate Kid every time he came into the game.

I like Chism but I have started trying to see if he can make it to the 15:00 minute mark of a ball game without getting his first foul. Didn't get to watch the USCjr game but in the last half dozen games I have kept up with him, he hasn't made it that far.

very well said hat. It was clear against Florida that Hall and Woolridge are NOT producing. They have poor defensive placement and they're exhibiting little toughness, to say the least.

Although I get so frustrated that he plays him so much, I cannot argue that Pearl plays with heart and attitude...

He gets after it on the defensive end, and I can't count how many turnovers he forced or forced UF into a bad play or shot last night

Nice post... good points... and well said. I've been a critic of some of your posts but have no problem also giving a thumbs-up when warranted.

Thanks, hat. The blame on Steve Pearl has been akin to blaming a Cavalry horse for the Polish army getting crushed by the Nazis...he never should have been there in the first place, and, though not adequate by any means, he does the best he can.

The fact some people think Steven is our #1 problem validates the idea that a good portion of our fanbase knows nothing about basketball.

I respect Pearl for the effort he gives every night, and his game has improved every year, but I think Cam will start getting more of his minutes and it should be a nice change of pace for our offense

+1000 Great post Hat. If E-man could play, Pearl wouldn't be.

You guys act like he is afflicted in some way .... stop with the metaphors and just say - Great Job Steve ! One of the few Vols that live up to their potential every night ! Is that soooo hard ? Why does every compliment come with a "but he is too short, slow, white, etc" comment. Just say thanks for being there and doing your best.

Now if we could say the same for 4 or 6 other guys then we wouldn't be the worst fan base in the country (as reported here).
