Yeah, I agree that a 1-3-1 is not a good matchup for Memphis. Undisciplined streetball does not work well in that setting. Too much over-penatration, not enough ball movement, not enough moving without the ball.
"Undisciplined streetball". Same old song and dance.
Pastner plays a completely different offense from Cal, and uses a completely different defensive scheme. Cal had top 5 defensive teams in the nation year in and year out at Memphis, especially in the half court. But UT fans called his schemes "undisciplined streetball".
Now that Pastner is here the scheme has changed, but some fail to realize.
I wouldn't call it undisciplined streetball. I do think they you all are going to see a lot of zone. You're a lot like we were with Pearl; lots and lots of teams will zone you, and you will struggle much more against it than you would if they played straight man. As for Pastner's scheme, we'll get to see what he's got this year. The last couple years haven't been overly impressive.
We've got more than a few zone busters on our roster, as Belmont saw.
Team's may zone us this season, but not for the same reasons as they did in the past and not for the same reasons as teams zoned Pearl's squads.
Most UT fan's hope you all had a fluke shooting day against belmont. Also, the 1-3-1 is significantly, significantly different to attack than the 2-3. Also, Michigan plays that as a staple defense and not as a defense they're playing because they're playing Memphis.
Fixed the first part for accuracy.
I'm not expecting Memphis to have to get into much half-court offense vs. Michigan. Michigan's offense is just deplorable and they don't take care of the ball.
Even if we get into a half-court set, we have the shooters to knock down open shots along the baseline and an elite PG who can get it to them.
It's going to be an interesting game.

Why would most UT fans give a crap one way or the other? I don't. I'm just stating what seems obvious to people other than huge Memphis homers. Michigan's offense is deplorable? I'm assuming you haven't watched them play or studied them at all. There is no one that is more effective in the halfcourt than a John Beliein team. I thought you might be capable of rational discussion, but it's clear you're not.
Against Ferris St. (Not even D1)- 62 possessions, 59 points, 10 TOs.
Against Towson (ranked 316th)- 63 possessions, 64 points, 14 TOs.
Not even 1 pt per possession, against the worst of the worst.
Contrast that with UT's offense which, even from posters here, is not UT's strong suit.
Why would I just go around saying "Michigan has a bad offense" if I hadn't looked into it? Do you have some stats to refute this?
They're doing a little adjusting with not having Darius Morris. Once the freshman PG gets in a groove, they're going to be fine. Hardaway, Jr is excellent and Novak is a tremendous shooter.
They're not ever going to score 100 points a guy when they're rolling at 100%. If they're shooting well, I think they'll beat you all. Just my take. I'm sure you think that's beyond the realm of possibility since your team is better than most NBA teams.
By the way, looking on ESPN for total points in a game and claiming you have the first clue about their team isn't exactly convincing.
You'll see. If I had to pick between John Beilein and Josh Pastner in a half-court contest, I'll let you guess which one I'd take. Although, by the same token, if this is a fast paced game, you all will win decisively.
Belmont thrives in the uptempo, though.
I can't agree that Beilein is a better coach than Byrd. More ambitious, maybe. Better, not noticeably.
I don't think it's close. Byrd gets built up by people who somehow thinks it makes their team look good by bragging that they beat mighty Belmont. He's never beaten anyone worth noting; he just loses relatively close games. And, he wins in an absolutely pathetic conference. He's a solid coach, but not in the same level as John Beilein.
Also, if Belmont thrives in the uptempo, they're going to lose 10 times out of 10 by going uptempo with Memphis. You all are better and more athletic at every position.
