I think we hit a home run with Cuonzo Martin

But he has Ernie and Allan Houston's backing, so that makes him a coach who knows his stuff and is a home run hire for us. /sarcasm

That could be the worst attempt at sarcasm I've ever seen. Most people consider NBA executives backing to be fairly legitimate. Shocking they didn't back Rick Byrd. Maybe you should go on back to getting owned on the football forum.

It was a joke. Look, people question the hire, and they should honestly. This is pretty much the same hire as Dooley was with football. Both come in talking about making men out of the boys they are coaching, and putting integrity first. Dooley got roasted by the masses for even mentioning high character, and most thought, and some even still think, he won't win. So, people have the right to be skeptical right now, especially till we see if he can coach in this league.

I don't have any problem with people being skeptical about the hire. However, citing NBA executives backing of the guy as a reason to be skeptical is about as stupid as it gets.

So, if Phil Fulmer and Johnny Majors back a hire, would you believe it's a solid hire?? Both have won NC in football. I'm just using it as an example.

I'd do the opposite of whatever Failmer suggested. A legitimate comparison would be if Bill Polian and Bill Parcells recommended a guy to me.

Wait, what?? That's NO WHERE NEAR a legitimate comparison. What in the world have Ernie and Allan built, that remotely resemble the resume of the two you just mentioned?? Surely your joking.

That's fine, Eric. Believe that a recommendation from NBA execs. is a bad thing. The other 99% of us will continue to think that's a good thing.

You named two NFL execs, and one was a coach, who have built winners and world champions. What has Ernie or Allan built that is close to that?? It wasn't close to a good comparison, period. I'm happy that they took the advice of two UT alums, but again, how do they know him?? I have yet to see anyone answer this question sensibly, or really at all. People just keep saying that they helped recommend him, with nothing after that.

People have given you a host of ways that they could know about him. You choose not to listen so you can continually act as if Alan Houston and Ernie Grunfeld both somehow just magically pulled Cuonzo Martin's name out of their ass to suggest to UT.

Then list them for me. I'm not going through hundreds of posts to try and read every detail. If you know, then please by all means post it. Thank you in advance.

I believe he played against Allan Houston either in high school or throughout it via AAU. He played against him in the NBA, and Grunfeld was in the Knicks front office at that same time putting them all in the same business at the same time, they had to of had some type of familiarity with each other. Also, when Martin was coaching at Purdue and Missouri St, Grunfeld and/or Houston very well could have reached out to Martin and inquired about players he has coached putting them on a level playing field in terms of taste in talent, and how Martin could evaluate it.

Ok, that's fair, but wouldn't that just be really sparse contact most of the time?? It's not like they were on the horn everyday saying what's up. They might all be friends in the background, and that's fine too. Coach Martin is in for a tough next few months, and I'm behind him, just like I was Coach Dooley, even though I thought Dooley had a better resume than Martin does at this point in time. Dooley has helped build NC's and he's coached in the NFL, Martin was an assistant at Purdue, and a HC in the MVC. I'm definitely not excited about the hire, but he is my men's b-ball coach and has my support.

They've already been posted multiple times in a thread where you would have had no choice but to read them.

Ernie Grunfeld has suggested we hire Bill Self, Jay Wright, and Bruce Pearl. If he suggested Cuonzo Martin, that's good enough for me.

Apparently not. I guess it would have been better if no one held the new coach in high regard.

I mean, what the heck does Ernie know? He has no ties to UT.

Just kidding. But seriously, I bet people on here don't even know who Ernie Grunfeld is. Which is sad.

When is the last time you heard a couple of alum come out publicly against a new hire in the athletic department? It never happens.

Not really. Martin has a winning record and won a conference title, Dooley has a losing record 4 out of the 5 years he's been a HC.

A better resume???? Dooley had a losing record in the WAC, has a losing record as a HC, while Martin already has back-to-back 20 win seasons and a conference title as a HC.
