I have just never liked them. I dont really know why, nothing against Joe Pa, but I would love to take State Penn to the woodshed. To be honest Im not in a hurry to play Wisc and that running game they have.

Wisconsin would only scare me if (1) QB Stocco was a runner... which he isn't rushing for -84 yds this season -or- (2) they put their freshman RB P.J. Hill behind center to take direct snaps.

However, looking at Wisconsin's schedule, they really haven't played a quality schedule. Hill was held to 54 yds by Michigan and 50 yds by Illinois. He had 77 yds against Iowa. However, he did rush for 148 against Penn State. The rest of the schedule is so bad, his stats are padded.

PSU is ranked 29th in the latest AP poll, between Oregon St and South Florida. Not exactly murdurer's row. I read where someone said they beat one team this year with a winning record.

UT is ranked 17th currently. Going to this bowl against that competition is a letdown. Similar to going to the Peach Bowl against Clemson when UT was a top 10 team.

I think that Penn State would be a good match up for the Vols. IMO Wisconsin would run the ball all over the Volunteer defense.

Wisconsin would get destroyed just like UT destroyed Michigan in the Capital One Bowl in 2001.

I dunno....those dirty badgers whooped a good GA team last year. I'd rather us take a bit outta Team Joepa

Want local to me Capital One. If not I'll drive two hours to Outback. Would love a Wisconson or Penn State. Have friends who are huge Penn State fans and that would be interesting. No ties to Wisconson and think it would be a better game.

since 1996, Wisconsin is 1-3 versus SEC teams. i could go back further, but it doesn't get any better.

they think they're hot stuff right now, despite playing nobody this year and because they beat an incredibly uninspired Auburn team last year.

y on earth would ya'll not want the best possible bowl possible? more money and a chance to truly see how we compete against the bigger schools of these supposed "lesser" conferences. Settling on Penn St?

I agree, bring on Ohio State!

OSU would pound our eyes shut. I'd rather carry a little momentum into next year following a bowl win. Remember what those Peach Bowl losses did to recruiting.

a) The money gets spread around among the whole conference anyway, and there will be an SEC team in the Citrus Bowl even if it's not us.

b) I don't think we need "a chance to truly see how we compete this year," because we're already know that we're not that good -- we're the 5th place team in the conference, after all.

A few years ago I would've agreed with you -- I always wanted to play the best team available. But we were better then; at this point I just think we need a win in a decent bowl to act as a springboard for next year. And I like our chances against Penn State better than I do the Wisconsin running game.

Plus we owe them some payback.

I don't see any benefit in beating a team ranked 10+ spots lower. Everyone expects you to win, and if you lose it looks terrible. The Peach Bowl loss a few years ago was the same scenario.

Whats is their to gain?

Doesn't the school of their bowl game get a lions share though?

I confess I don't know exactly how it works; I think I once read that the school spends all the money it wants to on the bowl trip itself, taking along everybody in the band's sister, and then whatever's left gets split out among all the schools. Whether that's exactly how it works or not (anybody know?), I don't think the difference between these bowl games matters too much. We'd make more money just playing another home game.

(This, obviously, is why Notre Dame has never joined a conference. They get to pocket all of that $14m themselves.)

Edit: I can't find a good single & authoritative link, but a little Googling around suggests that all the major conferences do indeed have a formula that the participating team keeps a percentage for expenses, and then the rest of the money gets split around among the rest of the conference. Here's how the Big 12 does it; presumably the SEC is similar.

the complete thrashing put upon us by Tosu might actually help poke the fire of some changes... hmmmmm

Ye of little faith. Were you guys also preaching the pounding/trashing Cal would give us the home opener too?....

I realize it's a mute point since we will not play OSU this season, but I still gotta stand up for the boys in orange. It'd be a shootout with OSU and I think calling it a pounding or thrashing is a bit harsh. OSU may be able outscore anyone, but they aren't the greatest team of all time by any stretch of imaginations.

No I was not. I predicted a large win and got it. Cal is no Ohio State.

If you think it would even be close you need to seek counseling. I love my Vols enough not to wish that kind of embarassment on them.....not this year.
