What the talk was like after Fulmer and after Kiffin? Was there this much Gruden talk? Were there any big names as "sure" as Gruden that fell through?

Just curious because there is a LOT of smoke on VN about Gruden and I don't know how common that is during a UT coaching search.

Is there more smoke around this than other similar examples from the past?

There's always smoke about Gruden here and everywhere else that needs a HC. I'm more realistic. Lovie Smith is coming.

After Kiffin left it was up in the air. The circumstances were really strange, but we did get some people saying things like "Lovie Smith is on the plane to Knoxville!!!" only to end up with Derek Dooley. You would be wise to not get your hopes up on Gruden just because people on this forum talk about him.

There was very little mention of Gruden after Kiffin. Much more about guys like Mushcamp, then Calhoun/Whittingham, a sudden/desperate rumor about Lovie Smith and ultimately the AD spitting in your face that was the Dooley hire.

Post Fulmer, it was a little different. There were hopes for Gruden, but he was still Tampa's coach and he came out and said he wanted to stay Tampa's coach fairly early in the process, so that sort of killed that talk.

I'd revert to the Defensive Coordinator job opening last year as a good gauge. I'd say much like now, about 75% of the people were not only hopeful, but POSITIVE that we were getting Randy Shannon that it was comical.

Hamilton did not act. He reacted. He did it twice and did it as a media driven circus. Hart is playing it close to the vest and seems to be acting rather than reacting. He appears to have a plan and is putting the plan into action. Time will tell.

Yeah I knew the Randy Shannon thing. I still feel like there is twice as much smoke regarding Gruden.

Nice clarification. I found out Kiffin left after an ex girlfriend texted me (FSU alum/fan) asking what was up with my coach. Then at work I was perusing govolsextra.com and saw Dooley hired..was like WTF.

There is always BS regarding any situation. Not just on VN but with local media as well. You have to be careful what to believe. I can say I had never heard of Dooley in my life until the day they hired him. The Gruden talk has been around for a long time, but never this bad.

To be honest, I was also on another chatboard at the time Fulmer and Kiffen left. Sadly, only a few of our fans are in reality. Gruden and Kiffen were the names after Fulmer. Once we got Kiffen the ppl went nuts, That dude is awesome, he will bring great asst's, 5 star athletes.....right, BURN!!! I was so pissed after Kiffen left I ignored the board. Dooley, IMHO, brought integrity back. He wasnt the guy for the job. He had to go. Kudos to DD for taking over a mess on Jan 15th of all times. Now, all I hear, if we dont get Gruden, Petrino, or Davis, anything else would be a fail hire......Im convinced, a good portion of Tennessee fans are smoking a crackpipe!! Hate to say it, but its true.

Who in their right mind would have taken that job on January 15th? Two weeks before signing day!! We were under NCAA investigation, Kiffen left the place in shambles, your lucky someone took the job.

After Kiffin left, everyone calmly posted their congratulations to Lane for taking his dream job and then offered their prognostication on the replacement.

after fulmer, some "insiders" said that butch davis was a lock but not to the extent of the current gruden fervor.

randy shannon was also a guarantee as DC at one point.

the gruden enthusiasm is 2nd only to that surrounding johnny majors in 76.

Man there was so much smoke from the Shannon deal it wasn't even funny. Book it, it's done deal, blah blah blah and inside source crap.

Don't forget the Ktown news reporting Cut and company as the new coaching staff.......all to pull the story a few hours later.

Yeah, it's so hard to fill jobs with 2 million dollar salaries. If anyone was lucky that day, it was Dooley. He had duplicated the record of the guy who got fired before him at La Tech. He probably would have been fired in another year. But we come in and more than double his salary, give him a high profile job with top facilities, fan support, athletic budget, etc. and one of the biggest buyouts ever for when he inevitably fails? That's lucky. Even with Hamilton bungling things and trying to get by on the cheap, at the very least, Sumlin would have taken the job if offered. UT was anything but lucky that day.

Incredibly doubtful. Dooley was very well liked by La Tech fans. But hard to argue with anything else you said.

After reading here for years and a Proud Member of the POS BAnd from 82-86 under "DOC" I earned my orange with 750 am practices and putting a new show on the field every week

That being said It's intimidating as all get out to put an opinion here with all the troll name calling and bashing of new folks

it is somehow refreshing seeing a question asked

Welcome to the board. This is a stressful time to jump in, for sure. I'm surprised nobody's called you a jackass yet.

the only thing that needs to be said about the last two hires is mike hamilton. the present state of the program is ample proof of his competence.
