I wouldn't trade Butch Jones for anyone.

In a vacuum, yes, I would take Saban. However, we don't live in a vacuum, we live in the real world. And in the real world, Saban coaches for Bama, has apparently grown to love it there, and he d@mn sure doesn't want to be at UT. Butch WANTS to be at UT. So yes, I would take a Butch Jones who wants to be here, over a Nick Saban who would only want to be here for the money. On top of that, Saban is a complete douche bag. I tend to not like douche bags.

We clearly have different definitions of foolish, but I do appreciate your articulate response to my post. I thrive on constructive criticism.

You don't have to defend your post. There's nothing wrong with getting passionate right now. Good time to be a Vol.

in the real world, nick saban wins national titles. at an alarmingly high frequency, at that. that's really all that i care about.

if you think that butch jones wouldn't leave UT for a substantial pay raise, then i don't know what to say to you. coaches want to be at different schools because of the money. if butch jones really wanted to be here because he has a true innate desire to be at Tennessee, then it wouldn't take $3 million to get him to be our coach. I'm sure he enjoys UT and I'm sure he believes he landed in a good situation. I'm glad he's here too. but I don't really believe he wants to be at UT any more than he would want to be at florida, bama, michigan, ohio state, etc.

I think saban probably thinks the same thing about Alabama. If Texas comes calling for him, they'll probably offer him substantially more money than bama is currently paying him, at which point bama is going to hit him with a higher counter offer. this happens literally all the time with coaches are every school (see Charlie Strong circa UT coaching search 2012). If Saban really wanted to be at bama because he for whatever reason cares about that school more than others, he would never get raises cause bama would have no incentive to give them to him. they would know he's not leaving so theres no reason to hand him more cash.

too long; didn't read: people follow money. saban/jones want to be wherever their lives will be the most pleasurable. This involves lots of factors such as location, facilities, ease of winning/recruiting, etc. But these are all massively trumped by salary. In the end, everyone has a price

If Butch can recruit like Saban, he will compete with Saban. Saban is a good coach, but I have never given him the genius status that most do. The real secret to his success is recruiting. Good coach + the best players = championships.

Strong is a good coach. A lot of vol fans are giving him heck for that 1 loss, but remember...that is the only loss on the season. I would've been fine with Strong, but I am really happy with Butch right now. I was one of those folks who needed to be won over, and he's done just that.

1 loss with the easiest schedule in the country. Butch Jones would be undefeated with Louisville's schedule.

This. Foolish statement by OP.

I don't think it's foolish at all. Saban is a great coach, but he is also a collossal Prick. He has a tremendous program but I think his time is limited before he retires. The question becomes this... Can Butch be that good? His recruiting has been beyond expectation in a big way, he has taken this team and is making better football players out of all of them. His system is a great mix of winning the trenches and getting the ball into the hands of skilled players. His players will "run through a wall" for him, Saban's players... I'm not so sure. Not too many people like him. I think Butch may be the under the radar hire of the century. He has a relentless blue collar work ethic and he is a smart Xs and Os coach that is continually learning.

My bottom line assessment is that Saban is clearly the present... Butch could well be the future. I'm glad he is here. :peace2:
