Idaho to drop to FCS

The writing was on the wall when they got notice that the Sun Belt was kicking them out. They cannot afford to play as an Independent.

I anticipate that a similar announcement will come from NMSU sooner rather than later.

Would be their best move. NMSU and Idaho could join Big Sky. Wonder if Mountain West would take NMSU.

Saw the article about Eastern Michigan possibly leaving the FCS ranks, as well.

If the number of bowl games continues to rise (what, 40 now? 41? ... that's 80-82 teams playing) ... and the number of teams eligible for bowls continues to fall (128 now, 125 if Idaho, NMSU, and EMU leave) ... pretty soon we could have more than just a few 5-7 teams playing in bowls.

"You were 4-8? No problem, we'd love to have you. It's all about rewarding those darn kids for trying hard all year, right?"

Coastal Carolina is making the jump to FBS in 2017, so that will take the total to 126 if Idaho, NMSU, and EMU all drop. And it's possible that the MAC wouldn't want to sit at 11 teams for long, so a program like Youngstown St might also make the move. Plus UAB returns next year, so we could be back up to 128 pretty quickly.

It's one thing for these programs that have been historically awful to drop down or shutter their programs, but it's going to be very interesting if a school like Hawaii decides that football isn't worth the cost. And their AD has made statements that indicate that such a move could happen before too long.

The issue with the bowls is sort of a non-sequitur. Idaho, NMSU, and EMU haven't sniffed 5-7 in years, so their presence in FBS is not furthering the issue of losing programs making bowl games.

Here's why it's not a non-sequitor: those three teams may not go to bowls, but they lose games in the regular season that make other teams eligible for bowls. Fewer 3-9 teams to pad the stats of the 6-6 or 5-7 teams, and you have fewer 6-6 and 5-7 teams.

It's always gonna be a bell curve. You lop off bits at one end, and it's just gonna rearrange itself to get back to that shape.

It's all really just math and stats. I know that's kinda hard for folks who studied at Bama, but do try to keep up, Writer. :)

I see what you're saying, but the teams who are on that line will simply play another terrible team from FCS or whatever. Heck, they may play one of the three teams we're talking about. The well of cupcakes will never run dry.

100% of my edumacation came in Tennessee. All of my ignorance is the fault of TN public schools.

They can't do too much of that dipping into FCS waters...only one/year counts toward bowl eligibility. And a lot of the teams who need that to get to a bowl are already using their 1/year anyway. So the reasoning remains valid. :)

You grew up in Tennessee and root for the elephants? Man, something somewhere went really wrong for you!

They changed that rule a couple of years ago. Now 6-6 teams with 2 FCS opponents can go to bowls, but they have to be picked after teams with only one FCS opponent. 5-7 teams come last in the pecking order.

Just one thing?

I grew up in Bama and root for the VOLS. It's a crazy mixed up world.
