If anything, this year solidified how amazing Hyatt was

That's weird, why did we stop "scheming" receivers wide open? Seemed to be pretty effective.
Given time good DCs will figure out this offense. UGA showed the way by playing press and making the WRs beat them straight up. No confusion about who takes who. Granted, we won't face that level of talent in the secondary every week, but the flip side is also true. Defenses aren't seeing Hooker, Tillman, Hyatt and McCoy either. This year is clearly the result of our lack of playmakers at several positions which limits what Heupel wants to do along with DCs being much more familiar with this offensive scheme.

I think Thornton was supposed to be that guy. He pretty much hasn't lived up to the hype he arrived with, then being hurt the the 2-3 games. It looked like he may have a hand injury, so how much will that affect his ability to catch a Milton rocket when he comes back? Keyton was expected to pick up a lot of the yardage Hyatt had from last year, but he has had a bad case of the drops in critical situations, as well as not catching the ball when it has been delivered right in the hands for what would have been sure touchdowns.
What you are saying just proves my point. Someone should have at least expected this from Keyton. As for Thornton, well I have not seen anything approaching a competent receiver out of him, injury or not. Injuries are a big part of the game, next man p. Seems we just didn't think about this happening, because we have no "next man".

Thornton was expected to provide speed, coming from a proven program, and Keyton was espected to take that next step. Together with Bru and Squirrel we were set up to succeed at WR, but it hasn't worked out. Bru was hurt and Keyton regressed, so guys like Webb and Nimrod have been forced into action.

Not sure why some look at this like a video game where pieces are just plugged in and the machine rolls on. When you're replacing players of the caliber we were and a program is still only a couple of years removed from the garbage dump, there are going to be some ups and downs. Let the season play out and we'll see the growth of guys who will be big factors in the next couple of years as recruiting ramps up as well.

Again proves my point.. Other teams (several in fact) have nearly completely rebuilt from the transfer portal and money. I would have hoped we could have filled in these gaps with a little fair to middling talent. As for Thornton, well again not very good evaluation of a guy's ability. Makes me wonder how we got Bru. Who did his evaluation and recruitment? Is he still on staff?

Being more to the point - -
This day and time the only reason to have a "weak" receiving corp is poor planning, poor evaluation of players, poor recruiting,,, you get my point. With the transfer rules, NIL, to me it boils down to staff problems on the above points. No need with a pass heavy offence ( even though we run a lot) not to be able to find good to great receivers to recruit or buy.... You see it with nearly every game where a team has "upgraded" from the year before in most areas of need by the portal. Just can't see why we have such a poor group of receivers.
Losing Bru hurt alot, I don't think Thornton is the player they expected him to be. We'll be ok when the young guys get stronger so they can win the battles off the line of scrimmage. #govols

I'm hoping personnel (players) had more to do with the lesser performance of this year's pass game than Alex Golesh leaving. The way our receivers got open last year was fun to watch.

Losing Golesh was a big deal, IMO. It will take Halzle a couple of years to start anticipating defensive adjustments and plan accordingly.

Hyatt was a good receiver who was ridiculously fast, but lets be honest. Many of his touchdowns were a result of scheming him wide open.

We just don't have the firepower this year and Milton hasn't been very effective in the intermediate throws.

Also, not sure how much this has to do with our new OC or personnel, but we throw far more WR screens this year as well.
This is uneducated. Is he schemed open in the NFL? He runs by db's plain and simple. He is a good route runner. I swear half this fan base is freaking clueless.

Not really. You're always going to take a step back when replacing the kind of talent we lost, and Bru's injury was a killer as he was expected to be 'the guy'. We're still 2 1/2 years removed from a dumpster fire in the kind of rebuild that would generally take minimum 5 years given the talent that walked out the door after Pruitt was fired, and some of you want us competing with the Alabama's and Georgia's of the world instantly.

Those schools have waves of 4 and 5-stars as reserves, and neither one is lighting it up offensively after losing offensive talent. Like I said, it isn't a video game where guys are just plugged in. Keyton showed every sign of being the next guy to step up, and Thornton was a highly regarded transfer. It hasn't happened for either guy so far, and Bru got hurt. You make it so cut and dried, but if it was that easy to find and develop talent why would anyone ever fail?

So I guess the Giants are just scheming him open?

I believe Hinton was a blessing last year. If the defense had half the talent he had we would have been in the playoffs. Heisman candidate for sure.
Let's back Milton and Squirrel, and see what happens in November

I don't think some folks realize there are four starters from last year's offense on NFL rosters. Tennessee is a top ten class or two from having that kind of turnover from a talent perspective and it not drastically effect them. I think a 9-3 record before the season started was a realistic expectation and they are on track. I can't remember the last time Tennessee had back to back 9+win seasons.....relax.
