If Cut Leaves...

No, it has nothing to do with that. It's just he has made calls to some coaches about a potential staff at NC should he be offered the job; not that he would definitely take it, but the he is considering it. It also has to do with the fact that he said openly he wants to be a HC again. Further, he has not denied any interest in other jobs other than to say no comment.

I never said he wouldn't be a head coach again. All I said was that he is going nowhere and he'll retire from UT. His interest in the UNC job is placing him in a position of strength come contract time. That is all.

How about Kippy Brown. He's got OC experience under Jimmy Johnson (Miami Dolphins OC 1998-99), head coach in the failed XFL league, and tons more experience as a position coach in college and the NFL.

Yep, that is EXACTLY where I would go. It's probably where CPF would go as well, come to think of it.

Incidentally, I know that KB has plans to return to TN once his NFL pension is secured. He was all set to come back except the money just wouldn't work.

Great, great coach.

I see. You're implying that he will be TN's next head coach. Interesting. Could be.

If Cut gets a raise, they'll have to raise Chief as well.

1. Cut will not be the next head coach at UT.
(Hamilton wnet and got a hot coach for BBall)

2. "Cut positioning himself for a raise"??uhm...what about Chavis.... if you raise one you have to raise both......

3. Whoever comes after Cut (if UT finishes well) will bring close to a million dollars.

Agreed.

And to those who point out a HC gig would pay Cut' way more....you are right. But that isn't what it's about.

I have no crystal ball. I am simply expressing what I have been told. If I hadn't heard otherwise I'd subscribe to the conventional wisdom too.

It should be fun to watch it play out.

Told by whom????

I suppose someone also told you that Cut had been promised the HC job at UT when Fulmer retired or got canned???

i disagree... that would raise several eyebrows, Chief's most noticeably.... how do propose keeping chavis happy w/out giving him a raise as well?

Because he's received raises recently. His defensive unit isn't playing its best, anyway. Cutcliffe has completely transformed this team. Chavis has done nothing to warrant a raise this season.

You give raises to coaches with actual leverage. Who's going to hire Chavis as a head coach? Nobody. Therefore, unless he wants to go to the NFL or make a lateral move, he'll have to live with whatever UT decides to do.

I think this defensive unit is playing very well considering the talent, especially considering the fact that they have no natural run stopper other than Mitchell, and they have no defensive linemen big enough to draw double teams to keep offensive linemen off of him. If Cut gets paid, Chavis will want to be paid too.

His leverage may be saying adios.

Wanting to get paid and having the leverage to do so are distinct from each other.

i'll give you that 19.1 points per game is questionable, but the D is holding opponents to under 300 yds of total offense and averaging over 1 INT per game... not as bad as some people like to think.

You are correct, and I like Chavis, but he is replaceable. I also think that games against LSU and Arkansas are the games that Cut has to prove his true worth.

But a move raising DC so far above JC is an invitation for division and strife on the team. I wonder if Chavis will walk over it.

Chavis has to prove his true worth???

You gotta be kiddin me.....

He has "proven" his true worth for years. How quickly last year is forgotten. His unit was the only bright spot.

And did you forget that the Cut bailed to go to Ole Miss. Where was his proverbial loyalty then??? If Ole Miss was not soo stupid that would have kept Cut then where would the Vols be.

Cut left once... he will leave again with an OK option!!!!!

Yeah Im not understanding why Chavis has to prove himself when the defense has been a consistent strength most years, and overachievers when the talent isnt there.

I agree that Chavis has proven himself to be a solid DC over a long period of time. In most cases from 1999-2005, it was the strength of the team.

However, I'm not sure what year we were "overachievers" because of a lack of talent. When year(s) would that be?

Nobody is saying he's not any good or has to prove himself. However, to get a RAISE, CPF would have to base a raise on 2006's defensive performance, which has left a little to be desired, IMO.

Well Actually....... the DB's are been very good for Chavis, the linebackers have done pretty good, and the Dline has been up and down....LBs and Dline have had some trouble stopping run.

As far as Cut is concerned QB and receivers have done very well. RBs have not had much of a chance to shine. Oline is horrible when run blocking.

So it seems about equal to me!!!!!!!!!!

MichSt announced that Smith is out at the end of the season. Steve Mariucci is already being mentioned as the leading candidate for that job. I've heard that Cut wants to be in the south anyway, so I guess I wouldn't worry about that one too much.

Can't imagine that Cut would be a candidate for that job.
