If Hart blows this...

If Gruden doesn't coach here it will have nothing to do with Hart's efforts or lack there of. I swear some of you people are just plain dumb.

Wow, crazy assumptions here.

Why automatically assign the blame to Hart if it's Gruden who chooses not to come here? There are things more important than money in some people's eyes; the declination of the Arkansas offer should be an indication that money and perks weren't enough to sway Gruden.

If Gruden does say "No" to us, maybe the onus is on him and not on Hart.

Sorry, I forgot... we're a vindictive as hell fanbase that wants someone thrown to the wolves when we don't get our way. I keep having to remind myself of that.

I think he is saying even if Gruden turns us down there are still better options than Al Golden.

The guy just convinced Cheek to put his job on the line by making a very public announcement of where AD funds would be diverted... And you're already assuming negativity?

Dude, for the sake of sanity, let this play out...

I don't think people are giving this enough attention. That move was HUGE, especially when you understand the tension that has existed between UTK and the UTAD for some time.

I dont know if Gruden is necessarily the best fit for the program to be honest. He's certainly the "sexiest" name and I think many on here want him as our coach for the "how cool would it be" factor. But has anyone stopped to consider the potential downsides to having Gruden in Knoxville?

1.) Gruden's rock star status in Knoxville could serve as a distraction. At some point our team (and community for that matter) would have to get past the fact that we have a celebrity Superbowl winning head coach and see him simply as our head coach. Like it or not, that will be a challenge!

2.) Gruden has never been a head coach at the collegiate levell, nor has he ever had to deal with the challenges that brings. The 20 hour rule, recruiting, NCAA compliancy, etc. He's also been out of coaching for like 4 years. Those ARE concerns folks! Some claim that these would be complete non issues but I wouldnt be so certain.

3.) With the ridiculous salary that Gruden would command, just how much money would be available for a quality staff? What would you rather have? An all star coach with an average staff or a solid coach with an all star staff?

Yeah, if we get down to guys like Golden or Strong, then this whole episode has been a big failure.

The only people thinking Gruden is coming are the people on VolNation. All other credible sources say there is a very slim chance. There are other good coaches out there, and if Hart gets one of them, then he has done his job.

The OP's issue is not hiring Gruden, but getting Golden, which I admit would not make me jump up and cheer.

An important fact to consider is while getting Golden would suck he is still not Derek Dooley
I'd give him a chance, just as I did Dooley. Problem with Dooley, never a game where I said "Man, I think we have a good coach."(UC the only exception). While a lot of people biatch and moan about Tennessee fans, overall, Dooley had his chances. The blame lies entirely with him. Just a decent season in year two or three and some hope for better things ahead, the sniping by some would not have been relevant.
