Unless the replacement is Oregon's Kelly (who's too smart to leave the no-D PAC 12), there's no suitable college HC or Asst who won't make a deal now just because his team has a shot at the NC.

No. You do it now and send out feelers for those interested. You take the time and get a coach who is committed to Tennessee values. Personally, I like looking for people who have Tennessee ties. (Gruden was an assistant for two years in the late 80s). You make Gruden turn down lots of money multiple times if necessary the way Alabama approached Saban. Then you have a plan B, C, and D. And no coach with a losing record to start with!! No Kirby Smart either. He is just a part of the Saban machine. He would be another Sunseri.
Tennessee is not a run of the mill program. We should not settle for being average at best. Tennessee fans will support the team but the administration has to get this hire right. It can not settle for who is left.

Do you fire DD now and wait till 1/15/13 to hire the replacement, or do you hire now, then announce the DD firing?

Not complicated.

I am pretty sure Hart has had the feelers out for quite some time, gauged the interest and most likely has a deal already in the works. Firing a coach without having somebody lined up is about as smart as quitting a job without having another one to go to. Hart hasn't even come out and stood up for Dooley, shown any support for him or even humored anybody by saying he is our coach and we are sticking with him. His silence is a sign to me that he has been working on donor money for buyout funding, discussing options with the trustees and pinpointing who they want and how they are going to get him. If all of that hasn't already transpired, we are in for even tougher times than we are currently living in.

Whatever you do, you have to hire a guy who can recruit Alabama commits and aspirants, and the sooner the better.

I remember when we hired Johnny Majors on January 2, 1977, 24-hours after he won the NC. Unfortunately, the Bear was still in T-Town and it took Johnny 5-7 years to land top recruits. And in those days, LSU, Florida and SCar weren't very good.

Hammy wouldn't even be dumb enough to wait until 1/15/13 to hire the replacement. You get your new hire in ASAP for recruiting purposes. Every day you wait to bring in your replacement is one day further behind you have fallen in recruiting. That would devastate an entire recruiting class.

This is still one of the best jobs in the country. Lots of Money, big stadium , large and ( used to be enthusiastic ) fan base, best league in the USA, lots of chances to prove you are the man, lots of TV exposure. There are at least 10-11 top-drawer coaches who would come here if the price is right. This is reason talking- not emotion. If you are C Strong- would you rather coach at Louisville or here? I think the answer is here.

Besides Gruden (and Saban and Spurrier), any other current/former NFL HCs to pursue who might consider the job?

Why do we need a NFL head coach? They don't recruit in the NFL. I want somebody that can recruit and coach. Not just coach.

I would have thought the same about Charlie Strong until I read and article with the clip below detailing Louisville's AD's feelings as well as Strong's retention bonus:

"I will match anybody's salary," Jurich said. "I will match anybody in college. I will be supportive of whoever's here. Do they want to be here? When someone is being talked about, that's a compliment to our program. I've had it where you have coaches, and they're not talked about."
Alabama's Nick Saban is the game's highest-paid coach, with a reported salary o $5.32 million.
A year ago, Louisville extended Strong's contract for seven years and upped his salary from $1.6 to $2.3 million. But according to ESPN 680 Louisville's Jason Anderson, retention bonuses increase his overall package to around $12.6 million in the next four years.
That total doesn't have him far off from the game's highest-paid. If Strong ever does leave, sounds like Louisville will make the decision very difficult.

Any opinions on the Wisconsin HC --Bielema?

He's 67-22. Two Big 10 championships in 6 years.

41 years old.

Played Nose Tackle for Hayden Frye at Iowa. There's not a more physical team in FBS year in year out than the Badgers.

Can't see him leaving the big 10 but money talks

1. i will first mention something jeremy foley does that makes complete sense that i believe all athletic directors should do. but, if you believe him, foley has said he has a list of 5-10 names for any head coaching position at the school should the coach retire, be fired, leave for another job, etc, etc, etc.....at all times. so, to shorten this up a bit, hart should have a list of a few names already in mind for the position. at least a couple of those names should be the names of people he has a very good reason to believe would take the job.

2. you fire dooley immediately and you begin pursuing the names on the list.

at florida, foley pretty much has absolute authority. he's not making the hire because some big money boosters have hand picked the choice.

i have heard that at auburn, for example, the athletic director, has often been at the mercy of a select few heavy donors and who the donors want, the donors get.

so, the big question is, is dave hart making this hire or are a bunch of big money dudes who are going to be footing the bill for the buyout and such making this hire.

David Cutcliffe laughs at this.
