he better announce soon. He's labeled as "the Georgia Republican" by the media outlets but all of the GA leadership has already taken sides. Most of those in influence are actually on the draft Thompson bandwagon. He really has no one left in his old state to pull on board. Add to the fact he's registered to vote in VA now...

A Gingrinch presidential campaign would be every bit as successful as the one mounted by Dan Quayle.

It's funny to see Thompson already lock up TN and GA. Not sure where Newt can run to for help. All he can hope on is the alternative history crowd with his new book.

The sad thing is that in the debate I actually heard some things come out of the mouths of guys like Duncan Hunter that made a whole lot of sense, but I knew it didn't matter because they were completely unelectable.

A Fred Thompson candidacy is going to be interesting to watch to see if "gravitas" alone will be enough to make him emerge.

Yep. See that as well, the lesser knowns say some decent things sometimes. But it is worth nothing since they are not top tier.

The thing is though that we are still about 7-8 months from primary season. Nobody thought Bill Clinton had a snowball's chance at this point either.

True. But I don't memorize political history very well, did he climb over any big names in doing?

If Mario Cuomo had entered the race, Bill Clinton would have become a historical footnote.

The frontrunner was probably Paul Tsongas and guys like Jerry Brown and Tom Harkin probably had better name recognition in the beginning. It was probably an even more lackluster field than what we have currently though.

If that had happened, George W. Bush might be a historical footnote because I think the south would have stayed solid red and Papa Bush would have won re-election.

That's a tough call. I tend to agree, but I'm not sure anything could have saved Bush the Elder.

Honestly even if Cuomo jumped in he wouldn't have made it too far. He'd last in the NE but not in the Midwest or South. He'd win in NH but not IA.

I'm not sure Bush the Elder could have beaten Cuomo in Florida.

You have to remember W got pretty lucky with the 2000 election. He needed the supreme court to decide his victory. He actually lost the popular vote, which is very scary considering who he was running against. We have had terrible choices the past two elections. This one should be much better in the general election.
