If not Cutcliffe, then who?

I agree but I don't think it's going to happen.  We will end up getting coaches from smaller schools like we have been.

I agree. The only way you get an NFL coach to come to college as a coordinator is if you get an NFL position coach or a head coach who has failed miserably. No coordinator is going to make a lateral move at a lower level of play. IMO an up and coming coordinator from a smaller school is ideal.

I will toss out a name but I'm not sure what he is doing right now. I always thought Frank Solich would be a good coach to bring back the pounding running game to Tennessee. He was a coach who loved to run the ball. When you played the Huskers you knew it was coming and you could not stop it...seemed like every game 2 maybe even 3 guys had 100+ yards rushing.....just a thought. :dunno:

Solich is with Ohio University now (I believe). They beat Pitt early in the year.

It's an interesting story - after getting canned by Nebraska (look how well that worked out), he spent a year going to great coaches around the college and pro ranks to learn from them. He was determined to come back to coaching better than when he left.

That being said, I don't think the Nebraska style of old is what we need either.

We don't need to make a knee-jerk decision right know. This is something that needs careful study and time. We need to find an a guy who is smart, has good PR skills and would give a right arm for the job. Draw up a contract with golden handcuffs and let the school have the power. Not the coach.

Need to find a guy before recruiting starts heating up. We need to know who we have in order to make a player feel safe coming here.

Kubiack and Gibbs teach a zone blocking syatem that would not fit the personel on the Vols team. What about Russ Grimm. He is the O-Line coach for the Steelers and a former Hog from the Redskins hey days. I think he would be a great choice.

Our choice MUST, I say MUST, come from the NFL. Follow the ND, USC trend. We need 1st a man with knowledge(NFL), and secondly some Assistants who can COACH or carry it out!

Hey Sarge no way UT brings in someone who knows more than Fulmer and take his job in a year or two.

Dom Capers?  :eek:lol:

Houston sucks and he's a defensive guy.

Oh yeah, my bad. At least I caught myself after typing Kevin Steele on the list too. I think we should hire Ermey too, I LOVE that guy.

Ermey yelling at recievers: "Drop and give me 20 you maggot, why can't you catch that ball? are you SCARED of that ball? toughen up son, and show the ball whos in charge!"

Fulmer is probably going to hire someone who likes to run the ball, first and foremost--and I wouldn't be unhappy with such a choice--so long as he is smart enough and experienced enought to have a sharp passing game as well. I don't want UT brining in other Urbie, frankly--and I doubt Fulmer wants to hire somebody who likes to throw the pigskin all over the lot.

I agree about one thing: It would be nice for Fulmer to hire an NFL assistant--a QB coach who is tough-minded but smart and likes college football. That's what I'd look for. The Vols might get a NFL assistant--but the chances of getting a guy who's an NFL OC now are very remote--he would be a major step down! Not gonna happen. I wouldn't be unhappy with Cutlcliffe--I think he'd be major step up from what the Vols have now--

We've been through this, but what we need is a good staff - and that goes beyond the OC. We need to replace three coaches.

Fulmer has a major job to do as far as replacing three offensive and (maybe) one defensive coach. This is as important as anything he will have done in a LONG time. Because the powers that be are looking at him VERY closely right now, and he is probably aware that even he is NO LONGER IMMUNE from unemployment.

Of course, this is a good thing, because the power of self-preservation will be at work. So, ostensibly, he is going to be hiring guys that can coach. We'll see; and people are watching.

You may need to ask M Hamilton about that. He will be VERY VERY involved in this hire. Bet on that!!! As he was with Bruce Pearl!

You might be right, but I hope not. Last thing anybody needs is an AD hiring assistant coaches.

He needs to keep Fulmer from hiring another friend though. This is a job not a frat party.

I think Fulmer has been largely unaccountable in his mind. Thus, I think his FEELING accountable is a good thing; and it might humble him adequately.

Nepotism is no longer the way most successful companies run. There is a good reason for that!
