If not Gruden, then who?

Seems like a TON of UT fans are asking for a Jon Gruden Christmas. In fact, I'd venture to say that he is the only thing on the Christmas list for the majority of Vol fans. But what if he's not under the tree this year? Even worse, let's also assume that Patrino gets no chance due to his recent debacle, and that Mora Jr, Shaw, Patterson, and Peterson are not leaving their respective schools. Who would you go after?

Stoops, Fisher, Golden, Strong, B. Jones, Hudspeth, Briles, or someone else?

IMO, if we miss on Gruden, we will drop to the bottom feeders after we flounder around on our short list.

Stoops, Mora and Fisher are staying put.

Fedora isn't bolting after year one.

I believe Strong when he says he's staying.

Tressel, Butch Davis, and Petrino are off the board for UT it seems.

Smart hasn't been a head coach.

That leaves us with guys like Golden, Jones, and Cut.

Butch Davis

Yeah, I said that earlier and you would have thought I said bring Dooley back. Most UT fans can't see the trees through the fog, meaning they can't see past Gruden. Gonna be a sad day for many Vol fans if they don't get their wish.

Nice out of the box selection! No HC experience is the only issue with him.

Roman started as a position coach and has been promoted to OC during his time with Harbaugh. I would talk to him for sure. Plenty of film he can show recruits of Frank Gore and that rushing attack. He has done well with Alex Smith where others could not.

As bad as I hate to say it.

Jimbo Fisher.

36 hour time frame. Give or take. If Gruden falls through look for him to be announced

Butch Davis almost killed the program at UNC. No thanks.

That's pretty much what happened when they fired Fulmer. They thought they'd land Muschamp or some other big name and they ended up with Dooley.

No I mean literally close down, tear down Neyland, etc. There is no awe inspiring coach after you get past the big four (Gruden, Patterson, Peterson, Stoops) that would united the fan base nor turn around the ship.

If we don't get Gruden or Patterson, things will look pretty bleak. I wish this would have timed out differently (though I acknowledge we had to fire Dooley ASAP, and probably should have done so last year). In another year, we should know more about mid major guys like Butch Jones, Mike MacIntyre, Mark Hudspeth, or Gus Malzahn, but it's hard to feel great about entrusting our program's future to them at this point. That said, I'd rather have one of them than an aging retread like Tuberville or Butch Davis. History shows those hardly ever work out.

Honestly, I really don't know what you do if you miss on the big 3 (Gruden, Petersen, Patterson). Its a huge step down from those guys and is super risky. My plan of action would be: whatever it takes, don't miss out on one of those 3.

Gary Patterson??? Come on... Throw some money at this dude, he and Bumpas could coach circles around Gruden... Rather have a coach who's known for fast, disciplined, over-achieving defenses than a coach who won a Superbowl with the best team in the NFL and is "good with QBs" even though he couldn't find one amongst the 7 he had on the roster his last year in Tampa...

No one knows for sure what is going on. I don't put a lot of stock in these so called "insiders" with sources. Money talks and coaches walk. They may all say they are staying, but if UT gives a substantial raise to any of them, they will come. We are not going to settle this go around, even if it takes time.

My bad. I said Butch Davis but for some reason I had Butch Jones in my head. Maybe because they're both named Butch. No, I agree on Davis being a flop at NC. But I am a fan of Butch Jones.

too many coaching vacancies and not enough quality replacements, at this point it's gruden or no one.

The only one out of those four that seems doable is Stoops. Can't see any of the others leaving where they are.

My top choices would be Bob Stoops and Gary Patterson. I think Gary Patterson is the most realistic. I also wouldn't be afraid to look at Jim Tressell(sp?)
