If Pearl Leaves...

Why is everyone crying about pearl?? Don't you realize what he has done for this Program?? Man up and support pearl and this team. Go vols!!

Obviously another reading challenged post. My question was not about bashing Pearl but asking if his job of lifting our program out of the doldrums and into national notoriety would encourage potentially bigger or better coaches to want this job should Pearl leave.

Please re-read and re-post.

I got a question?
How many people on this board actually watched UT basketball before Bruce was here?
Depending on how you answer that question determines if you want Bruce to stay or go.

I started following UT basketball on a regular basis midway through the Buzz debacle. Can you read my mind and tell me what I want?

The first games I can really remember watching were during the Houston era, but I watched some during Devoe's tenure as well.

I think my feelings on Pearl are pretty clear.

Early 80s when I was a wee one. I've sat through games coached by DeVoe, Houston, O'Neil, Green, Peterson, and Pearl.

So what do I want?

Been watching it since I was about 7-8, so about 11-12 years. I like Bruce, but after that game, my position on him as a head coach has softened. A lot.

Are you so myopic that you don't understand the difference between wanting him to improve and wanting him to go?

So what happened? You asked a couple of questions in an attempt, I assume, to solicit discussion and then left.

Or was there no point to your post?

Obviously I wasn't talking to you then!! I was posting to all the pearl bashers on your thread. Sorry didn't mean to hurt your feelings!

Had season tickets from the time Thompson Boling was built until I moved from Knoxville in 2001.

Pastner would come here for 2 million a year.

I am a big Bruce fan, but if with Ware and the others he cannot win very big by 2012, I think Hamilton needs to thank him for his awesome service and ask him to move to another pasture. I think Pump would be happy to help and he could turn around a moribund program.

The ultimate irony (impossible I know but funny to think about) is Pearl at Illinois. Pearl at Iowa could actually happen except he does not want to go there. Less spoiled fans though. If I had to guess where he would end up if he left it would be Big East using his NYC connections.

Given what he's done, if Pearly keeps winning and making brief tourney entries, he'll only be leaving of his own volition. That's probably fair. He has earned the right to try and get more done here.

If he decides to go, it likely won't be in Big 10 land or Big East land.

Speak for yourself, if this complacency continues I don't want it for my favorite team I want better. It's the price Bruce has to pay for bettering what we were, higher expectations. If he can't meet them, so long Bruce. If he can, great.

If Pearl didn't have a huge connection with the Pump Brothers, I'd say Oregon would come knocking on his door. But if he went there, he would lose a huge ally in the future. If Al Skinner and BC ever split ways for some reason, I could easily see him going there.

And I agree with you. He has this year and next year to get this program to elite status. There are no more excuses.

Roughly....88-89 season, Dyron Nix's senior year....

I remember the 101-40 debacle at the hands of Wade Houston....

I actually have Kevin O'Neill's autograph....

I don't think I missed a game when I was in undergrad under Jerry.....

And I actually followed them closely during the Buzz era....

So what do I want?

There is a big difference between a loss to a good team and a 22 point loss to a bad team who owned every facet of that game. Get over this rationalization crap.

It isn't Pearl's fault that this team wilts once everyone hits iron. We got good looks at the basket. This team just lacks confidence shooting the ball. I can't think of anyone better than Pearl to instill confidence in a team that is outpsyching itself.
