It needs to be considered that Arkansas came into their game today versus USC with the SEC's 13th-best passing offense, averaging 175.3 passing yards per game. This is what makes Arkansas "too one dimensional"...
The SEC's 14th-best passing offense? Tennessee. Will the Vols be able to prevent the same issues on offense that Arkansas presented to South Carolina next week?
This is one occasion where stats can get you into trouble if you are too shallow.
Arkansas' hasn't shown any notable signs of consistent improvement. Last week they were held to 164 yds on 43 attempts by UF. Worley threw for 149 in one half on 23 attempts with UF knowing UT had to throw.
If you look at UT's passing game over the season, you see a pretty steady progression as they continue to install the O and gain confidence/experience.
My short answer is that I think UT is better prepared to exploit USC's weaknesses than Arkansas was. And BTW, UT has virtually no experience at WR but has MUCH more talent there than Arkansas.
Arkansas came into their game vs USC with the 4th-best rushing offense in the SEC (216.0 ypg)- UT has the 7th-best (211.0 ypg).
That's kind of deceiving since APSU may be better than both Samford and USM. UT has to remain balanced to be effective though.
Arkansas had the 6th-best passing defense (UT has the 10th),
Oregon, a game in which the Vols just absolutely laid an egg, skews that stat ALOT. Minus that game, UT would be allowing 194.8 ypg which would be 3rd in the SEC. The season is young but vs the SEC... UT ranks 3rd in passing ypg. That's not really a cheap stat though since UGA has the 2nd ranked passing O in the SEC.
the 4th-best rushing defense (UT has the 11th),
True. Competition is again a factor but UT needs to do a better job.
and the 5th-best scoring defense (UT has the 12th-best).
This one is highly misleading due to Oregon. W/O Oregon, UT is around 4th in the SEC in scoring D. It hasn't taken nearly that much fire power to hang points on Arkansas.
Will the Vols be able to present a better gameplan to USC next Saturday than what Arkansas presented today?
We would hope so... but the fact is that UT has better personnel than Arkansas. You need to go deeper than just surface level with the stats.
