Huge flaw in the system if you ask me. This was basically Sankey throwing them a bone a couple of years ago and the only way that there would be an agreement. If we hadn’t lost to USCjr and came in at 11-1 and didn’t get a bye bc a Clemson team that plays in a mediocre conference beat a mediocre UNC that’s garbage. Luckily this is only a 2 year agreement and some kinks can be corrected in 2026.Yeah, the "conference champs get a bye" rule is crap. Pac 12 and ACC champs are receiving welfare.
So you are ok with a potential 9-4 team getting a bye in the playoff?Conference champs getting the bye is a smart move, IMO. Those should be rewarded if you are in the playoffs. That will help protect the regular season.
Now about the bowl games. I don't hate the volume, I hate the quality. I would like secondary tournaments. I'm not sure the best way to break that up, but maybe two tournaments with 8-12 teams in each. You would have the CFP, CFPjrWest, and CFPjrEast. Each one is isolated with its own tournament trophy.
Why? That doesn’t keep the regular season relevant overall. There needs to be a rule where the conference champ needs to at least be a top 10 team to get a bye. The split of divisions will probably make sure that doesn’t happen, but if UNC had beaten Clemson this past weekend there is no way they would deserve a CFP bye after losing to ND,GT and NC State.Yes.
Conference championships should be rewarded. If you are eligible for the CFP, and you win the conference championship, the team you beat should not get a bye over you. That is why, and I won't be taking your hypothetical statement bait. It's irrelevant to my answer or your question of why. Why? That doesn’t keep the regular season relevant overall. The reward is getting an invitation. They don’t make a 15-15 conference champion basketball team a 1 seed just because they won their tournament. They are usually in the play-in round.Conference championships should be rewarded.
