So if we get the #2...do we root for Ole Miss over Auburn? Beating Auburn wouldn't help our RPI compared to Ole Miss right?
There are five important things you need to make a run in the tourney:
1) Good PG play- Check
2) Good rebounding- Check
3) Excellent defense- Check
4) Consistent three point shooting- No
5) FT shooting- Check
We got 4/5 of the things to make the run.
The question is if we get there at this point.
neither would likely do terribly much
the only very major "pre-UK in the finals" RPI jumping game might be if UF wins tomorrow and we played (a higher ranked) them in the semis
Vandy in the semis might possibly also be helpful for the RPI
hopefully one of the RPI-focused guys comes by and explains all these a bit more
The only team that could make a noticeable difference in UT's RPI at this point in the season would be UK because of their gaudy record. No one else in the SEC has a good or bad enough record to move the need too much.
Would beating a team ranked higher than 13 in the tournament help our case more, though, just as far as the selectors are concerned?
Beating high RPI teams is good for UT's resume, yes. But at some point beating up on Florida again has to have diminishing returns. Just how much would be up to the committee.
And good wins/bad losses. Two wins vs a currently ranked FL and one vs vandy. Versus bad losses of Oakland, peay and c of c. The thing that will hurt us is we don't have any really good wins. Beating UK in the tourney could help. No Sig wins though.
would there be some benefit though to beating a UF team that had (just) beaten the #1 (#2 RPI) team?
Wouldn't that have some up on UF's RPI before we played them again? (i'm honestly not sure what would happen with their poll rankings now, since they lost to Vandy early in the week...beating number 1 seems like it would either keep them ranked 13 or possibly move them higher)
Florida beating UK would do little to nothing for UTs resume. About all it would do is guarantee Florida stayed in the RPI top 25.
Your talking about being ranked 13 which is probably either the AP or ESPN poll, neither of which has a bearing on the NCAA tourney.
thank you, that's why I'm asking
(wanted to clear up that I really don't know all this and have been asking; I've not been arguing or trying to debate)
now would it be of any benefit to be playing another bubble team like Miss St, one that we lost to earlier?
