Reggie may well have had the single most dominating season of any Tennessee defensive player as a senior (1983), when he amassed a school-record 15 sacks, including four against The Citadel. As highly touted as he was coming out of high school, however, he only exhibited flashes of brilliance as an underclassman; he began to play at a consistently higher level during the second half of his junior year. His reputation is predicated more upon his success in the NFL than his career body of work at UT.
With today's strength and conditioning programs, the lanky Doug Atkins probably would have played at 6-8, 330-350 lbs. and would have been an even more dominating force at defensive tackle.
