Which five coaches, current or past, would you draw guidance from in building your program?

No specifics, but I'd take advice from 4 highly successful(2 past and 2 present) and 1 highly unsuccessful(likely present).

I'd call Bobby Bowden to get him to tell me how to turn an also ran into a powerhouse.

I'd call Joe Paterno to tell me ways to keep my job.

I'd call Lou Holtz to get input on how to get the NCAA to ignore me.

I'd call Mike Shula to ask him for a date. :birgits_giggle:

IF I wasn't married of course.

You could probably learn all you needed to know if you could just get Switzer, Sherrill and Ford all together for lunch. Just be sure nobody sees you.

Bobby Dodd (Obviously)
General Robert R. Neyland
Steve Spurrier
Joe Paterno (Even though I am not a JoePa fan)
Frank Howard

Just cause I'm a Vol fan doesn't mean I'm BLIND.

I guess we all have our faults.

I'd lean on Spurrier for my offensive scheme. While no names are coming to mind at the moment, I'd want the Spurrier of defense as well. Bob Stoops' defenses seem to be more than formidable.

General Neyland for his attention to detail.

Barry Switzer to teach me not to have any kind of conscience whatsoever.

Like GAVol mentioned, I'd want JoePa around to teach me the virtues of a 40+ year career.

I would go with the new breed of head coaches. In no particular order:

1. saban/LSU
2. Richt/Ga
3. stoops/Okla
4. spurrier/Florida
5. p carroll/USC

I was a little hesitant to add Richt, being he hasn't one an NC, but IMO its only a matter of time. Bowden and Paterno are not gonna win another NC IMO.

1. Barry Switzer- In my program, the first rule would be that everybody has fun.
2. Bobby Bowden- Building a powerhouse from nothing proves the man knows what he's doing. He also is a true innovator.
3. Howard Schnellenberger- See number #2.
4. Jimmy Johnson- Changed the way defense is played by placing an emphasis on speed. Also, contrary to the popular image, he graduated a good percentage of his players.
5. Jim Tressel- He's won big at two levels. The formula he uses is proven to be successful.

That would be the greatest day of my life.

I'm surprised names like Bud Wilkinson and Paul Bryant haven't made anyone's list yet.

 Damn. I'm a tad slow. I still stand by my Wilkinson comment. :biggrin2:
I'm not sure how relevant a coach's principles from the segregation era would be today's game.

So I guess Bobby Dodd, and General Robert Neyland would be out too? Come on Hat.

They might provide some decent material related to the phlosophy of the game, but asking them how to build a program today would be like asking the Wright Brothers to comment on a 747.

I was just pointing it out... Heisman comes to mind too.

Wilkinson's teams captured national championships in 1950, 1955, and 1956, and amassed a 145-29-4 (.826%) record.

Switzer went 157-29-4 and won three national championships. He did it after integration. I'd rather hear what King Barry had to say.
