Switzer went 157-29-4 and won three national championships. He did it after integration. I'd rather hear what King Barry had to say.
I didn't say Wilkinson had to make YOUR top 5, did I? :biggrin2:

Not at all. It was just an easy opportunity for me to get in a shot on behalf of King Barry.

Surprise, surprise surprise..... Hat would talk to Switzer.

I wonder if he would have any insight on how the NCAA comes in to do a full investigation?

For the record....

Steve Spurrier- Offense
Pete Carroll- How to Coach Winners, to Win.
Phillip Fulmer- Recruiting
Woody Woodenhoffer- Defense and How to Except Losing.
Jimmy Johnson- Handling the Media, Working With Kids With Differing Attitudes.

Pretty easy. If I was wanting to actually learn how to be a complete headcoach, I would talk to these guys, they are some of, if not the very best at what I would talk to them about.

Are you saying that all Carroll had in the NFL were losers?

Woody W also has some pretty big rings to consider. I doubt he ever accepted losing.

1. Barry Switzer- In my program, the first rule would be that everybody has fun.
2. Bobby Bowden- Building a powerhouse from nothing proves the man knows what he's doing. He also is a true innovator.
3. Howard Schnellenberger- See number #2.
4. Jimmy Johnson- Changed the way defense is played by placing an emphasis on speed. Also, contrary to the popular image, he graduated a good percentage of his players.
5. Jim Tressel- He's won big at two levels. The formula he uses is proven to be successful.

I'll agree with 2,3, and 4 without question. Schnellenberger would actually be my top choice.

As to not retread on previous posts, here are five others to consider:
1. Erk Russell: Master motivator and defensive guru. Once watched him hedbutt two or three players who were wearing helmets at the time.
2. Tom Osbourne: unbelievably consistent, even if playing questionable schedules. Seems like Nebraska set all standards of strength training while he was there.
3. Bill Snyder: Turned KSU into a national contender....a national contender
4. Mack Brown: Master recruiter
5. Tommy Tuberville: How to use smoke and mirrors

Noticeably absent for good reason: CPF, Loyd Carr, Lou Holtz, John Robinson

Instead of Osborne, I would talk to Victor Conte and Pat Robertson. I could get the info on the latest in designer steriods from Conte and a lesson in being a sanctimonious dweeb from Robertson. It would have the same effect as talking to Osborne.

Good call on Erk Russell . . . .He grew a program AND a school all at the same time. The rest of the SEC is very lucky that UGA didn't have the foresight to hire him when Dooley retired or we would all have spent the 90s talking about how to stop the Flexbone.

I had a feeling that I would be hearing from you. I used to go to Nebraska every summer to play in a golf tourney with a bunch of lawyers. Annual tradition was to throw in the Nebraska vs. Florida NC game and watch it the night before for good luck.

I guess after watching that game over and over again I was converted, even though he is a sanctimonious dweeb.

I love Erk. I am glad I finally got that out in the open.

If I had my way, Osborne would be forced to compete in a UFC handicap match against Chuck Liddel, Tito Ortiz, Vitor Belfor, and Hoyce Gracie.

No, I'm saying Carroll has coached a LOT of winners and knows the mindset of them, knows what it takes to motivate them, and knows what they look and act like.

Woody was a winner more at the pro level than the college ranks, his time at Vanderbilt would be good to learn from.

I would think you could certainly count them on your fingers and toes, if they were not Vol fans.

So one guy won in college and one in the pros. They both failed pretty bad at one level too. My point is if Carroll is so good at motivating winners, and knows what they look like, then why was his stay in the league not a good one? Can he not see them once they're over 22?

WW coached some of the best to ever play football.

Wasn't the topic what you would do if you were setting up a COLLEGE team?

Yeah, thought so.

Said the ostrich...

You can't ignore the whole body of work, a coach is a coach. Would you eliminate someone like Lombardi because he was pro?

No, but if I was building a COLLEGE team, I would ask succesful COLLEGE coaches before I went to ask a pro coach.

So you would consult the Prairie View A&M coach (college) before a guy like the coach at De La Salle HS, Bob Ladouceur? (On a side note, Ladouceur has a great book out on team building and how he did it at DLS.)

Coaching is coaching, but it's more about building a team and making them believe. I would rather talk to a guy who has succeeded at every level than a guy who specializes in one.

Well that's what's great about america isn't it.

We are BOTH allowed to have our OWN opinions.

1. Spurrier for offense
2. Saban for defense
3. Pete Carroll for just having fun at the top
4. Bobby Bowden as the ultimate team CEO
5. Frank Beamer for the details, such as special teams
