I actually know a guy who was a benchwarmer at Duke. He was recruited and offered a scholarship being told from the beginning that he was going to be a glorified sparring partner for Jason Williams. Coach K was up front about it during the whole process, and the kid has never regretted his decision.
For that he got a great education for free and the opportunity to suit up twice a week for one of the most storied programs in basketball. It isn't such a bad gig.
Dook has 8 burger boys...8...heck ..I think the water boy was even all state.
at least Notre Dame sucks and no one cares about them anymore.
Any team that wins 20 games with the regularity Duke does and reaches the final four as often as they do gets hype and coverage. Duke hasn't reached the Final Four in quite some time and their "hype" has gone down considerably. I guess the Pats don't deserve their hype either.
UF is down this year and the media realizes that, KY is terrible and IN, UCLA and UNC all have their share of games on national TV....This is nothing new with virtually every game they play being on ESPN....I honestly like it because I am Duke fan and I am not the only one either....Duke's national following is larger than any other school in America and that is why they are on every night....You're right - I wouldn't care if Duke weren't good. They're a great program and definitely deserve hype and attention.
But are they great enough to warrant far more coverage than every other program? Tell me, why does Florida not get all but one game on TV, 19 games on ESPN/ABC, and another 3 games on CBS? What about the 5 other teams that won a NC (for that matter, made a final 4) since Duke last won? What about the other programs that have more NCs all-time (like Kentucky and Indiana and UCLA and UNC)?
because very few people watch florida. Even LG will admit that. UNC gets all kinds of hype. Where exactly are Kentucky and Indiana right now? If they were the prominent teams of this era, they would get more hype. UCLA is just starting to get back into the limelight. Duke arrived and hasn't left yet. Duke has a large fanbase all over the country and they garner ratings. Just like the Yankees do. It's been the same thing for decades. Back before cable and having games 7 nights a week on TV, you were subject to the Yankees for baseball and usually the Redskins for the NFL. It's just how it works. If Duke was to fall off the map (like they did in '95), they're ratings would tumble and they wouldn't be on TV as much.
People don't watch UF b/c they don't get to see them. UF 's basketball attendance is far greater than Duke's. Duke oftentimes doesn't even sell out Cameron Indoor. And if they could sell the tickets, they'd build a bigger arena so they could make more $$.
Listen, I feel the same way about Duke as I do about ND and the Yanks. I hate the monopolization of the media. When's the last time the Yanks won it all? ND? The reason people like these teams is b/c that's all they get. They're force-fed Duke, NYY, ND, and it takes over at an impressionable age.
So why didn't Duke's coverage tumble in '95, or better yet, this year coming off a year in which they were ousted in the first round of the NCAAs?
They haven't made a final 4 in 6 years, yet they get far more coverage than any other team. Why do you think that's true?

Sorry to state the facts...
Duke's coverage took a serious hit in '96. Also Duke doesn't have the fans in Durham. They're just everywhere else. Duke didn't tumble this year, because they were rebuilding last year and are expected to be much improved this year. They still put up the TV ratings. When UF is on ESPN, the ratings are simply not as high. It's that simple.
In all fairness to Duke they have a hall of fame coach and soon to be gold medal Olympian....He's been to 10 final fours, 3 NC's....That's why they get more coverage, when K hang's it up the ratings will fall....IRT your comment about UT, to be honest TBA looks boring at times and ESPN is not in a love fest with the SEC the way they are with ACC.....Maybe if UT could go on a good run and get to a couple of FF's win a NC in the next few years I could def. see them getting more coverage....What facts did you state? Find me another school that has that many games on ESPN/ABC (and CBS combined, if you want - it's 22 for Duke, btw, and there aren't any ESPNUs there either). Duke's relationship with ESPN is somewhat similar to that ND has with NBC.
Duke's national following is precisely because they are on every other night. If UT got that treatment, I'd be happy too. But I hope I'd realize it's not balanced.
Sorry, but to me SEC basketball is boring...I'd bet a ton of money that Duke got more coverage in 96 after a disastrous season than Florida is getting this year after back-to-back NCs. I don't care that they're rebuilding either. They've won 2 NCs straight.
Ratings aren't that high b/c nobody knows who they are, b/c they didn't get the same coverage when they were winning two straight NCs - not b/c they're not good or exciting. Just like nobody knew Duke's players before K helped them ascend in the mid-80s. Florida should get the same treatment Duke did after its consecutive NCs in 91-92.
no. The Nielson rating proves it. Florida wasn't even getting high ratings on CBS. They simply aren't that big of a draw, championships or not.
Sorry, but to me SEC basketball is boring...
That's why I say when K retires that the ratings will shift....In the last 10 years he has one a NC and had some pretty good teams, hate to beat a dead horse but if a couple of players would have stuck around he probably would have won another (Brand, Maggettie, Deng)...That's fine. I don't disagree, esp. this year.
And I agree K is a great coach, but his recent history (last 10 years or so) is not that much better than about 6 other coaches (Donovan, Izzo, Howland, Williams - Gary and Roy). I just think he and his teams get too much coverage, and there are many, many fans who agree.
