If you're a benchwarmer at Duke,...

So everyone here is discussing the media's love affair with Duke but one topic hasn't been breached yet.....The official's love affair with Duke...

It's a known fact that everyone that doesn't sport Duke blue believes they get ridiculously fair treatment from the refs...especially at Cameron...

Being a born and raised UT/UNC fan....family on both sides of the border....I have personnally witnessed the crap that goes on at Cameron that they try to pass off as officiating...

What do you all think?

Spoken like a true Pukie...

It's funny...I hear everyone complain about fair treatment for Duke...especially at Cameron...

But I only hear Duke fans complain about fair treatment for UNC

Hey man...I'm a little bitter right now...

I have been bombarded this year from Duke fans...

It seems everyone around me is a Duke fan right now...at work, my roommate and all of his friends and co-workers...

I'm a little on edge with Duke right now...

Oh...here's another reason to dislike them....Duke Vitale...:eek:lol:

Show me proof that Duke isn't the best team of the past twenty years and I'll start to see a better side of your argument NC. TV doesn't have the time to pull people in. The advertisers want ratings right now. Not eventually. Duke is the proven commodity. So is UNC.

UNC gets every bit the amount of coverage Duke does.

I wasn't complaining about coverage....I like the coverage they have gotten recently...

But nobody complains about UNC getting fair treatment from the refs (outside of Duke fans that is)..

Duke's treatment by the ref is a long standing sore point for every college bball fan that doesn't pull for Duke

I think it goes that way with every team. As for the charges, it's how the college game is played. Refs will still call a charge under the basket. Duke takes advantage. The reputation of Duke getting all the calls just magnifies how it appears. Carolina gets A LOT of calls. Kentucky used to get all kinds of calls. Bobby Knight gets a lot of calls anymore.

I will say I think the charge under the basket is a crappy call. But if you're not trying, you're not winning.

I can't argue with the past 20 years, but I don't know what 1987-1997 has to do with TV coverage in 2007.

What about the past 10 years?

In that span, Duke has 2 FFs and 1 NC. Florida has 2 NCs and 1 FF. So, how many NCs does Florida need before it is a proven commodity and starts getting more coverage?

when people start watching and when Florida becomes an annual final four possibility. That helps. Duke's run in the ACC the past ten years can not be ignored, and you know that.

Duke is like Ric Flair in his hey day or the heel HHH. No matter how much you hate them, you still watch. People hated Noah and so they just didn't watch him.

Fair point - I overstated UNC's coverage in comparison, but it's still not as great as Duke's. Check the schedules. 19 times on ESPN, ESPN2 or ABC. And 3 times on CBS. UNC has 16 games on those networks (I'm not counting all the games on ESPNU) and 1 on CBS.

UNC won a NC 2 seasons ago, sells out just about every game at 20,000+, and has one of the highest licensing outputs for merchandise, so they probably should be higher on the pecking order, but they're not.

and how many times have we seen Tyler Hansbrough or ole Roy on the front page of espn.com or sportsline.com? Way more than Duke. How many editorials have been written about Duke compared to how many have been written about UNC this season?

Again, you're missing the point. Duke has fans throughout the world. Carolina easily has the Triangle covered. Everyone knows Duke beats out Rutgers as the official university of New Jersey.

Like Duke's lone Final Four the past 6 seasons.

Their ACC Tourney accomplishments are great, but what does that have to do with them getting primetime coverage on ESPN2 against Albany in December?

It makes them a big draw. Duke gets huge crowds when they go to in season and preseason tourneys. No other school in the country can show the numbers that Duke has over the past twenty years.

Now we're getting somewhere. I like the analogy.

I actually think ESPN needs Duke - they need a foil, and Vitale has a great relationship with K and a great brand and can provide plenty of coverage for that foil. Duke's the epitome of privilege, and they're easy to hate, and that draws people to root against them. But in reference to another post, I guarantee there are more UNC fans nationwide than there are Duke fans. Look at apparel sales to see that.

(btw, did you mean to say that people hated Noah and so that's why they watched him?).

no. I can't explain why Duke haters still watch Duke, yet Florida (and more importantly Noah) haters refused to watch Florida.
