" Im not going to apologize to Ms. Sommerville.
What makes me shudder, head to toe, is the fact that everyone involved in this fiasco, excepting the man and the two perps, boasts a college degree or more.
I used to think that education made people wiser, more rational, humble, more respectful of rights of property, more circumspect and devoted to truth. There has never been less humility, respect, devotion, reverence, reason, rationality than now.
This decadence took root when a university education was deemed a necessary right of passage and adolescents were culled out of their communities and installed within faux Georgian and Gothic compounds for four years of debauchery and propaganda. Higher Ed now the gatekeeper to the middle class as well as the upper managerial class. And, the only things being taught arrogance, contempt, and presumption.
I don't understand. He was looking out the window and saw this and shot at them as they ran off, but they also almost ran him over?
My suspicion is that he originally claimed he ran outside and fired at them as they drove away. The law pretty much anywhere is that you can't shoot at thieves who are running away from you. Now he's saying they almost ran him over. If that were the case, they'd never have charged him in the first place.

Regardless of his guilt - what about the obvious guilt and illegal nature of the guys stealing the trailer. At a minimum shouldn't they all be charged?

Since the guy was shot in the face it would make sense if he was in front of the vehicle. It was his property, he was trying to protect it by standing in front of the vehicle. If the thief's tried to gun it to get away while he was in front I think he would have every right to fire his weapon in self defense, at least that's how I see it in my eyes. We must have laws that protect the law abiding citizens, not crooks.
My guess is the old man was in front of the vehicle if he shot the guy in the face? Is it considered fleeing when they are leaving with stolen property?
Agreed. If, however, he chased after them and fired at them, then he can be prosecuted. Either way, there is not excuse for the perps not being charged with the theft.
