I realize a lot of Vols fans are probably down after the 31-17 loss to Florida. Even though I'm disappointed that we lost, I am strangely optimistic after this game. As bizarre as it sounds, that was our best game of the year. The reason why: we may have made a lot of careless errors, but we played TOUGH! Our guys looked like they could win.

A few weeks ago, I created a thread on Jim Harbaugh and the Blueprint for Building a Program. Harbaugh went 4-8 and 5-7 during his first two years at Stanford. His teams were terrible on paper, but they were tough and played like they could win every game that season. Harbaugh's first team was the best 4-8 team I've ever seen. Even if Harbaugh's first two teams were poor, Stanford dramatically improved as more talent came in, eventually culminating in a 12-1 season with an Orange Bowl win.

Conversely, there was Derek Dooley. No one expected Derek Dooley to win the big games in Year 1 ("Year 0" on the Dooley calendar), but it was how we were losing that was disheartening. Our guys would frequently quit in the second half; even when the games were relatively close. Young men need leadership; they need someone who can pick them up, and Derek Dooley couldn't do it. With the exception of Tyler Bray, our guys would almost always play like they were beat the moment adversity struck. That's why in three years under Dooley, I never felt good about our team. I gave Dooley a shot, but there was never a moment where I thought, "this team can be good eventually."

What encourages me after watching the Florida game is just how mentally tough our guys were. Yes, we made a ton of mistakes (especially on offense), but I saw a very tough team out there that never gave up. That Florida team clearly had more talent than us, but we made a game out of it.

My thoughts on the game:

1. People second-guess the Peterman decision, but the truth is that we have no great options at QB. Butch needed to try out Peterman in a real game environment and it didn't work. While Worley would've made fewer errors, I don't think this is the primary thing that beat us.

2. Our defense looked good for much of the game, but our big weaknesses were once again exposed. Florida had more speed than us and was able to get to the outside too often. We also had difficulty containing a dual-threat QB. (In fact, we were much better off with Driskel in there, whose motion was limited by injury).

3. Other than the speed issue, our defense looked excellent. I'm very impressed with our guys' improvements in tackling in the past few games. Our secondary also did a much better job of covering receivers; in fact, that's why Martin was forced to run so often. Unfortunately, we had no answer for that.

4. Worley "won" the QB job yesterday, but I'm still not convinced he gives us the best chance to win. Worley is a ball-control, game-management QB. Whereas, Butch Jones does not run a ball-control, game-management type of system. In spite of his frequent errors, Peterman is a much better fit for Jones' system. He can run more and he can throw the deep ball, which opens up the offense. But it's also clear that Worley is the better overall quarterback right now and Peterman is going to turn the ball over A LOT! In other words, we have no great options here; we are simply picking our poison.

5. I'm thinking Georgia is going to be really tough for us. I can't see our offense keeping up with Aaron Murray and Todd Gurley. This would actually be a good game to play Peterman, because I can't see Worley keeping up with UGA.

6. South Carolina and strangely, Alabama, might be our best shots at upsets. No, I don't think we'll beat Bama, but they do at least seem like a better match-up for us. Our major weakness is obvious: we can't stop speed. That's not as big of an issue with Bama. We might be able to hang in on a 'ball-control' type of game with Worley at QB.

7. We have a legit shot at beating Mizzou, Auburn, and Vandy, but all three are going to be tough. I'd be particularly concerned about Auburn, given our weaknesses defending dynamic offenses. This is to say, unfortunately that we will probably be 6-6 or 5-7 this year.

What's obvious to me after watching this Florida game: we are really struggling on the talent front. We have a weak secondary and too little speed on defense. We have no good options at QB. Our WR corps is rapidly improving, but still very young and inexperienced.

I'm still hopeful for a big upset, but more importantly, I want to see continued progress. I think Butch has us on the right track. We're going to get better, but it will take time.

I agree that we've got nowhere to go but up. I'd also agree that for the last three years the defense looks like its running in mud. Given the projected class next year, yeah, I'm optimistic too.

Projected is the key word

as much as I hate to admit it, until this roster is full of CBJ's recruits, we're not going to be playing for SEC titles. too many people on here think we should be undefeated right now. we need a "Kids and idiots" forum on this site.

Saban went 7-6 in his first year at Bama and lost to ULM at home. Everyone needs a little patience.

Exactly.

Last year we had what might be the worst defense in the history of this program and there has been no dramatic infusion of talent to that defense. People seem to keep forgetting the whole talent issue.

as long as we progress each week. ideal to me would be winning one of our next 3 big games and 3 of four in november, which if we progress over the season should be very doable

We lost handed the game back to Florida when they tried giving it to us. That's not good.

Speaking of s______y defenses, did anyone watch the Air Force Wyoming game last night? I stopped watching after Wyoming scored their 7th touchdown. Sure, it's Air Force, but they were playing Wyoming. Not Oregon.

Air Force defends our country though. That is all I really care about in reference to them... And I am grateful.

Hey, as long as our guys focus on the process and relentlessly pursue continuous improvement, then it's all good, right?

I agree OP, that's why I've been avoiding this place for a day. We are on the right path and we have the right leadership. The morons who have given up after yesterday don't know a thing about football. Probably our really young fans, but still, I've never seen such unnecessary panic.

The fact you're sayin to still play peterman makes me think you've got more than a few screws loose up there.

Our roster doesn't know how to win yet. That part of coaching won't happen overnight. It takes a change in culture.

To the OP, that was a great and accurate write up.

When Driskel got hurt I actually wondered if we were cursed because I knew Driskel was actually a better match up for this defense.

The thing I'm most sorry about is that Florida is the one team in the top twenty we match up with. UG and South Carolina can throw the ball. Coach Jones missed a great chance at his signature win.

I'm more optimistic too. Dooley's teams would give up. I haven't seen that yet, even in the beotch slappin by the duck dynasty. I still won't rule out an upset against UGA, USCe & even Bama. If Bama and Georgia play us like they played in weeks 1 and 4, I like our chances for an upset.

Here's to hoping they just take us for granted!

I live in Colorado Springs, I wish the service academies would go to FCS so they can be more competitive. They can only recruit top talent that is academically fit and with clean discipline records. Also there are size limitations for recruits too, so they can't get really huge guys.

FCS makes more sence and I want the service academies to win it all again. It will still be tough against North Dakota State and others but much more competitive.

Why? Because an inexperienced redshirt Freshman who has never started a game made a lot of mistakes against the best defense in the country?

If you had put Peterman in as Florida's QB and Murphy in as Tennessee's QB, I suspect that we'd be talking about how good Peterman looked today, and how terrible and error-prone Murphy looked. Peterman in 2013 is much better than Worley in 2011. Peterman makes mistakes, but he also has a great arm and can run the ball. The mistakes can possibly be fixed with experience. Worley, on the other hand, seems to be much closer to his ceiling.

If anything, the crazy thing is believing we have a "good" option at QB. We are picking our poison.

I think it will be difficult for this team to pick up 3 wins in November. Unless our skill players and QB play improve drastically, I think Auburn, Mizzou and even Vandy will be tough. We'll probably be underdogs in all three games. Hard work can't give Worley talent he just doesn't have, and he's probably our starter. My optimism has downshifted after seeing us play the worst UF team I've seen in a long time. We might have hung in four quarters, but we were outplayed in all of them and failed to capitalize on a whole game full of opportunities that were handed to us.

agree with OP. I was starting to think I just knew nothing about football(maybe I still don't) because I wasn't hitting the panic button yesterday. The fact that UT could have won if they had capitalized on turnovers and not turned it over themselves, is what made it so maddening, I think
