I'm not sure NIL is the real villain here

That is correct. A Federal Judge ruled the NCAA couldn't punish a transfer by making them sit out regardless of how many times they transfer.

And guess who joined in as a party to the lawsuit against the NCAA? The Attorney General of The State of Tennessee.

Basically, UT (no doubt consulted by the AG) supports this chaos.

Maybe he’ll tell pro sports leagues that have a salary cap that they can’t.

They have Antitrust Exemptions which allows them to negotiate salary caps and such with the player's union.

Folks who want to see the NCAA get an Antitrust Exemption should understand that the result will be that the college part of college sports will only exist if the pro teams lease the logo, arenas, facilities, etc from the schools.

Of course they knew this would happen. The larger, more moneyed schools are having success in this wild west.

Tennessee has been quite successful in the portal and schools like Oregon, Ohio State, and Michigan simply buy the players they want without any problem.

I believe I heard Milroe will be at Oregon next year.

The NIL ready schools, like UT, don't mind this whether the fans hate it or not.
The difference is coaching I think. The players see it and that’s why they left I think. Money gets you a lot but if you still aren’t winning, what is the common denominator? Coaching.

We can go 10 wins and a playoff berth next year and a first round loss will have people calling for CJH head. Why? Because he is getting us only so far. He loses the games that matter most and if they happens often, then what does any of this matter? Just my two cents…. And my opinion on this changes daily it seems.

I don’t think originally they knew it would turn into this. No one did. But you would think someone should have thought for further out to come to the conclusion that it was going to be the wild West.

UT had a vested interest due to potential players being deemed ineligible or having to sit a year. So they acted and here we are. At the end of the day, they may find it wasn't worth it.

It's going to be extremely difficult to fire a coach who gets 9 or 10 wins and puts you in the playoffs more often than not.

It's the Ohio State problem currently. Day gets them a helluva lot of wins, but not against Michigan and they hate it.

You can't fire a coach like that or like Heupel getting us in the playoffs often because WHO DO YOU GET?

You want to move up, not down, so there's a small set of coaches that will take you to the trophy, very small, and you won't get Lanning from Oregon or Sark from TX or Kirby from GA...... where is the pool for that "next level coach" who can assure you of moving up?

Georgia did it with Richt. 10 wins wasn’t enough. I’m not saying the staff is the issue but it seems if money is the same (or more for UT as reported) then what is it?

When fans stop buying the tickets, giving to the funds, etc. UT will mind.

Yes, the state of Tennessee and UT was one of the states that filed the lawsuit. Karma!
I can’t believe they can even regulate the portal opening and closing. Before long they’ll be leaving at halftime. I’m all for compensation, but letting the “employees” (and I know they aren’t technically employees, before I get some long diatribe from someone) run the show isn’t good for any kind of business. But I do think it’ll right itself…..after some SEVERE growing pains.

GA got extremely lucky and the Saban school of coaching is now closed. They'll be no more proteges of Saban turned out in Tuscaloosa.

It's a really, really small set of coaches who ever win trophies. Firing a 10 win coach and taking a chance on getting better is high stakes gambling, IMO.

Even Kirby’s luck will run out.

I don’t disagree. But is UT ok with CFP berths for years to come without one championship?

Nope. They won’t be.

And I know this is on down the road to discuss but it’s the reality.

As we've seen, the genie isn't going back in the bottle if every attempt the NCAA makes to rein things in results in a lawsuit from the big schools and a loss for the NCAA.

In Alston, the Supreme Court basically said "the NCAA is an illegal business in violation of Antitrust Law" and now everything they do will be sued on Antitrust grounds and they'll lose.

There may be a solution but it won't be the NCAA AND any organization that forms won't be in violation of Antitrust Laws. That's not going to be easy to pull off.

As much money as was being thrown around to players through the years (allegedly), players still wanted to play for a Bryant, or Stallings, or Majors, or Fulmer, …..and ESPECIALLY Saban. For all of the money that was being paid, I actually believe that the man behind the whistle carried some weight. ….and that may be just some romanticized mess that I dreamed up 🤷🏼‍♂️. But now, I believe who the coach is carries little to no weight. Money steers the ship 99.9%.
I may be wrong, most likely am.

The most likely scenario is Heupel begins to be less effective and loses more and becomes easier to replace. But that just means you have a bigger pool that can do better than say...... 8-9 wins, even a 7 in there, and maybe we don't see the playoffs for 5 years.

Coaches that can beat that are easier to find BUT they still aren't the creme de la creme to a trophy most likely.

It's just not that easy to win it all.

But that’s the goal. It’s everyone’s goal hence why coaches are fired all the time. Win championships.

Players want to go with a winner AND make money so you'll see kids gravitate to Oregon, Ohio State, TX, GA, perhaps UT, Bama, and Michigan...... at least right now. I might've left one or two out.

Money and wins. It's pretty obvious money is first, wins is second, and coaching is likely a distant third with Saban gone.

Before the money came above board, it was basically 4 or 5 teams you could count on to get you close and now there might be 8 or 9.

You can search forever for the trophy and not get it except by having a great coach, a lot of close but not quite, and finally a magical season.

If you think someone is going to appear who is as dominate as Saban and live in Knoxville, it's not happening.

Think long and hard before firing a coach that puts you in the playoffs regularly.

After each of these playoff games and bowls, we gon be hit with a thousand "xxxx plans to transfer" stories.

It is beyond foolish to think one coach, two coaches, three coaches are the root of it

Chit is not only happening at Tennessse.

Edit: But by Gawd lettuce fahr Kelsey Pope.

Maybe so. But Cal should have won more NC’s with the talent he had. I also doubt that any football coach can use that same strategy for a football team. Can’t pay that many mercenaries to affect the numbers needed.
Same was said of Fulmer. However in hindsight, we were so spoiled! Outside of Alabama, no other SEC program had that kind of sustained success for that long.
